Transitions 5: From Death to Life - April 6, 2014

Transitions 5: From Death to Life
Text: Ezekiel 37:1-14; John 11:1-7, 38-44; Romans 8:6-11
Ezekiel's vision of the valley of dry bones helps us to understand the power of God's Spirit. We are reminded that there are no situations that are beyond all hope, and Christians are invited to see the potential of God's work among us. On this Annual Meeting Sunday, Pastor Jon attempts to help us look into the future with sanctified imagination and with vision. Instead of simply resting on past successes (or being discouraged by past failures), we are called to move forward into God's preferred future for us as individuals and as the church.

Transitions 4: From Darkness to Light - March 30, 2014

Transitions 4: "From Darkness to Light"
Text: Ephesians 5:8-14
Chaplain Mike Griggs (USCG) offered this morning's message about the ways in which we are to be shaped by God's light in our lives. Punctuated by the words of ʺLet the Lower Lights be Burning,ʺ he looked at three key points: destiny, direction, determination. As we understand that we are children of light, we learn how to relate to the world and to each other, and we don't give up as we attempt accomplish God's purposes in our lives.

Transitions 3: From Despair to Hope - March 23, 2014

Transitions 3: From Despair to Hope
Text: Exodus 17:1-7; John 4:1-24; Romans 5:1-11
Water is an essential component of human life... and Living Water is an essential component of our spiritual lives. Pastor Jon looks at two familiar scripture lessons about water, exploring the transition from despair to hope. As God's love is poured into our hearts through the power of the Holy Spirit, we are not only reconciled to God, but are called to be ambassadors for the Kingdom of God, bringing hope to the world around us.

Transitions 2: "From Law to Grace" - March 16, 2014

Transitions 2: "From Law to Grace"
Text: Genesis 12:1-4a; John 3:1-17; Romans 4:1-17
In studying Romans 4, we discover that it's not so much about doing away with the law, but the realization that trying to keep the law does not provide salvation. Pastor Jon explores the interplay between grace and the law, drawing upon familiar passages of the Old and New Testaments.

Transitions 1: From Sin to Righteousness - March 9, 2014

Transitions 1: From Sin to Righteousness
Text: Genesis 2:15-17, 3:1-7; Matthew 4:1-11; Romans 5:12-19
As we enter into the Lenten season, we begin a series on the transitions brought about in our lives because of the person and work of Jesus. This week, we focus on how sin entered the world through Adam, but righteousness entered the world through Jesus.

When Heaven Meets Earth - March 2, 2014

"When Heaven Meets Earth"
Text: Matthew 17:1-9
Transfiguration Sunday invites us to consider our mountaintop experiences. Pastor Jon takes two common lessons that are traditionally connected with the Transfiguration, and turns them ever so slightly to help us discover some new lessons we may not have previously considered. As you reflect on your own mountaintop experiences, may they continually reorient your perspective toward God's reality and God's kingdom.

Building God's Temple - February 23, 2014

"Building God's Temple"
Text: I Corinthians 3:10-23
On this special Sunday, the Cape Elizabeth Church of the Nazarene honors Pastor Emeritus Roland Stanford and his wife Phyllis. As we continue our study in First Corinthians, we discover some key points about what it means to build God's Temple - the Church. We recognize that we receive a trust from those who have built the foundation. We stress the importance of building what will last - the Kingdom of God. And we hear the warning to not do anything that would destroy that temple.  Ultimately, this passage is an invitation to put our faith on the Church's One Foundation - Jesus Christ, our Lord.

Cape Elizabeth Nazarene Podcast - and Expanded Video Ministry

Greetings in the Name of Christ!
I want to thank you for being a faithful subscriber to our podcast. Whether you listen weekly, or only periodically, we're glad to have you as part of our extended family.  Since we began our podcast, we've had over 30,000 unique downloads of our audio sermons. It's a blessing to know that our ministry reaches to traveling nurses and truckers, missionaries on the other side of the world, and those who are isolated from a church community because of location or health concerns.

I'm writing today because we're looking for a handful of people to help us with a new internet venture. God has placed within our congregation some individuals with skills, passion, and desire to help us reach out through video ministry as well. This would allow us to cable-cast our services to our surrounding communities, live-stream on the internet, and offer video-on-demand through a variety of distribution channels.  It's our belief that this will allow us to impact our local communities, as well as to enhance our internet ministry.
I don't believe that I've ever written to our podcast subscribers to request financial assistance. We intend to always offer our resources with no charge (manuscripts, audio downloads, and (if we proceed) video).  I also commit to you that we will not begin filling your email inbox with solicitations!
However, as you know, endeavors like this do require significant resources, and we're doing all we can to identify those individuals who would like to help with start-up expenses, or with monthly support of our expanded online ministries.
If God leads you to support us, either with a one-time gift or some monthly support, please email me at pastorjon@capenazarene.org and let me know. Even a small monthly gift would help with wiring the church with internet and putting together our streaming services.
Regardless, I would ask you to pray for us. These are exciting days for the Church, and God continues to use the people in Cape Elizabeth, Maine in powerful ways.
Grace and Peace,

Pastor Jon

Under Construction - February 16, 2014

"Under Construction"
Text: I Corinthians 3:1-9
Paul continues his letter to the new believers in Corinth, encouraging them to move on from "drinking milk" to "solid food." Just as a baby must learn to feed themselves, mature Christians should not be content with being spoonfed, but instead have learned to feed themselves. We not only feed ourselves the "solid food," but we help others discover where the spiritual food of the Gospel can be found.  Spiritual growth can be uncomfortable, painful, and even messy... but growing Christians continue to draw closer and closer to God.

Eyes, Ears, Hearts, and Minds - February 9, 2014

"Eyes, Ears, Hearts, and Minds"
Text: I Corinthians 2:1-16
After emphasizing the core essentials of the Gospel, Paul invites the maturing believer to deepen their faith, to be filled with the Spirit, and to have the mind of Christ. In so doing, our eyes, ears, hearts, and minds are opened, as the mysteries of God are revealed to us. Holiness is not merely a list of dos and don'ts, but an invitation to participate in God's Kingdom.

A Foolish Message - February 2, 2014

"A Foolish Message" - February 2, 2014
Text: I Corinthians 1:18-31
God doesn't often choose the eloquent, the influential, or the wealthy. Instead, he chooses the nobodies, the meek, the poor. At the core of the Gospel is a message that seems foolish to the world: that God would take on human flesh and bones, be born in a manger, and die for those who had turned to their own way.

Following the Leader - January 26, 2014

"Following the Leader"
Text: I Corinthians 1:4-17
One of the ways that Christ is made manifest through the church is rooted in the church's ability to follow the leader. As each individual seeks to discover God's will, the community is transformed. We do not simply follow human leaders, denominations, or traditions, but we seek to follow Christ alone. As we pursue His mission, our agendas and divisions begin to fade away.

Epiphany: Three Wise Guys - January 5, 2014

Epiphany: "Three Wise Guys"
Text: Matthew 2:1-12
The Magi give us a model for worship. We are committed to come, despite obstacles, inconveniences, and hindrances. We come, not only to bring our treasures, but to pay homage and to worship the King, submitting ourselves to his authority. We go home a different way, having been transformed by our time in God's presence and with his people.

Advent #4: Love Shall Be Our Sign - December 22, 2013

Advent #4: "Love Shall Be Our Sign"
Text: Isaiah 7:1-16
Isaiah presents a prophecy to King Ahaz, reminding him to stand fast, to have faith, because God is with His people. This prophecy reminds us to always seek God first, to stand firm in our faith, and to trust God's wisdom and direction instead of our own reasoning. The promise of Immanuel was fulfilled in Ahaz's lifetime, it was fulfilled in the birth of Jesus, and it continues to be fulfilled in our lives today.

Advent #2: Peace - Following the Child - December 8, 2013

Advent #2: "Peace - Following the Child"
Text: Isaiah 11:1-10
Isaiah's vision of the Peaceable Kingdom inspires us to live into the Kingdom where enemies will be made friends. Despite the seeming evidence to the contrary, we stubbornly proclaim that the Prince of Peace has come, and will come again.  The image of the shoot from the stump of Jesse gives us great hope, as we realize that God can bring light to the darkness, hope to the hopeless, and peace to those in conflict.

Advent #1: Walk in the Light of the Lord - December 1, 2013

Advent #1: "Walk in the Light of the Lord"
Text: Isaiah 2:1-5
On this Sunday of Hope, we look at the ancient vision given to Isaiah: a world where God's mountain is the highest, where all nations come to the mountain, where God is the righteous judge over everyone, and where we live in peace in the Garden of the Lord. While we await that time, we are not given the details of how or when it will occur, but are simply exhorted to "walk in the light of the lord."

Colossians #7: Submitted to Christ the King - November 24, 2013

Colossians #7: "Submitted to Christ the King"
Text: Colossians 3:18-4:6
We conclude our series in Colossians on "Christ the King Sunday." Even as we consider the practical implications of Paul's teachings, we are challenged by his broader point: to radically submit ourselves to the authority of Christ. As we look at a complicated (and sometimes controversial passage), Pastor Jon looks at the cultural context of the day and the broader trajectory of the Gospel Narrative, suggesting some ways of interpreting this passage that are consistent with the balance of the scriptural witness.

Colossians #6: Clothed in Christ - November 17, 2013

Colossians #6: "Clothed in Christ"
Text: Colossians 3:5-17
In this sixth message on the letter to the Colossians, Pastor Jon looks at Paul's image of a wardrobe, suggesting that when we are found in Christ and Christ in us, we are clothed with the attributes and qualities of Christ. This requires a complete wardrobe transformation, putting off the old in order to put on the new. When we do this, we not only represent Christ, but Christ puts to an end the divisions of ethnicity, gender, nationality, and economic status.

Colossians #5: Hidden in Christ - November 10, 2013

Colossians #5: "Hidden in Christ"
Text: Colossians 3:1-4
Pastor Jon continues our exploration of Paul's letter to the Colossians with a look at the first 4 verses in chapter 3. What does it mean that we are "hidden in Christ?" What does that tell us about the value that God places on his children? Pastor Jon draws from the parables of the the treasure in the field and the pearl of great price to help us understand the ways in which God pursues his children.

Sunday, November 03, 2013

Colossians #4: Alive in Christ - November 3, 2013

Colossians #4: "Alive in Christ"
Text: Colossians 2:6-23
The church in Colossae is being pulled in two directions: by those who would inject pagan practices into Christianity, and by those who would require gentiles to keep the Mosaic law in order to be Christian. Paul encourages the early church to continue to live in Christ, to be rooted and built up in him, to be strengthened in their faith, and to overflow with thankfulness.

Colossians #3: "Peace for the World that God so Loves" - October 27, 2013

Colossians #3: "Peace for the World that God so Loves"
Text: Colossians 1:19-27
As we continue with our study in Paul's letter to the Colossians, we are reminded that God, in Jesus, was reconciling the world to Himself. If the fullness of God is pleased to dwell in Jesus, and if the hope of glory is Christ in us, then we also have been given this ministry of reconciliation. As ambassadors for Christ, we must consider that it is not enough to simply repeat the message of Jesus. We must also perfect his methods.

Faith Promise: Aim Lower - October 13, 2013

Faith Promise: "Aim Lower"
During our annual missions convention, Rev. Gary Hartke shares about the three big rocks of missions: Prayer, Involvement, and Giving. Rev. Hartke is the Global Director of Nazarene Youth International, and came to share about some of the ways that God is using youth around the world in powerful ways.

Colossians #2: Seeing the Invisible - October 6, 2013

Colossians #2: "Seeing the Invisible"
Text: Colossians 1:15-20, 27
In this second sermon on the book of Colossians, Pastor Jon explores what it means to have faith in an invisible God. If Christ is the image of the invisible God, then we can trust the manner in which Christ reveals the Divine Nature. He is a faithful embodiment because God was pleased to have his fullness dwell within Jesus. Today's watching world doesn't need a vigorous defense of the Gospel as much as they need to see "Christ in you, the hope of glory," for if Christ is in you, then you are the embodiment of the Gospel.

Colossians #1: But Wait... There's More - September 29, 2013

Colossians #1: "But Wait... There's More"
Text: Colossians 1:1-14
We begin a short series on Paul's letter to the believers in Colossae. Pastor Jon notes that even though the letter is addressed to Christians, Paul prays that they will receive even more of what God has in store for them. The primary goal of the Gospel is not only that we would escape condemnation, but that we would live lives worthy of the Lord, pleasing to Him.

Was There no Balm in Gilead? - September 22, 2013

Was There no Balm in Gilead?
Text: Jeremiah 8:18-9:1
In our personal lives we usually pay close attention to annual open enrollment for renewing or changing insurance coverage. This week we will follow Jeremiah, the weeping prophet, as he encourages the people of God to renew their commitments to holy living. Pastor Gloria encourages us to ask the question, 'Why am I out of healing balm and what can I do about it?"

The Kingdom: The Return of the King - September 15, 2013

"The Kingdom: The Return of the King"
Text: Matthew 21:33-46
Many of the Kingdom Parables remind us that Jesus will return.  The parable of the wicked tenants should not simply be viewed as condemnation of the Pharisees and Sadducees, but a reminder that the new tenants (Gentile Christians) have not received the vineyard without also receiving the expectations of working in the vineyard.

The Kingdom: The Generous Landowner - September 8, 2013

"The Kingdom: The Generous Landowner"
Text: Matthew 20:1-16
What does it mean for us to recognize that compared to others, we are the 11th hour workers in this story?  On the other hand, what does it mean to consider that when compared to still others, we are the early birds?  More importantly, what does this story tell us about God's grace and the way that the Kingdom of God functions?

The Kingdom: Persistence in the Face of Injustice - September 1, 2013

"The Kingdom: Persistence in the Face of Injustice"
Text: Luke 18:1-8
Pastor Jon explores some of the ways that this passage has been misinterpreted, coloring our perspective of God.  We are reminded that God gives good gifts to His children (Matthew 7:7-12) and that every good and perfect gift is from the Father (James 1:2-18).

The Kingdom: Contentment & Generosity - August 25, 2013

"The Kingdom: Contentment & Generosity"
Text: Luke 18:18-30
In Luke 18, Jesus delivers a hard teaching to the Rich Young Ruler.  As we consider the ways in which we related to material possessions, we discover that the posture of the subject in the Kingdom of God is one of contentment and generosity.

The Kingdom: Like a Child (Part 2) - August 18, 2013

"The Kingdom: Like a Child" (Part 2)
Text: Matthew 18:1-6
Pastor Jon continues to explore the relationship between children and the Kingdom of God.  This week, we consider what it means to have a childlike faith, trusting God, and receiving God's grace, forgiveness, and unconditional love.

Sunday, August 11, 2013

The Kingdom: Like a Child - August 11, 2013

"The Kingdom: Like a Child" - August 11, 2013
Text: Luke 18:15-17
Following our Vacation Bible School closing program, Pastor Jon highlights the importance of bringing children to Jesus, and of telling the next generation the praiseworthy deeds of the Lord.

Sunday, August 04, 2013

The Kingdom: Wedding Clothes - August 4, 2013

The Kingdom: Wedding Clothes
Text: Matthew 22:1-14
In Matthew 22, Jesus again compares the Kingdom of God to a wedding feast.  As we consider the idea of wedding clothes, we are reminded that it's important to arrive at the feast, "dressed in His righteousness alone."

Sunday, July 28, 2013

The Kingdom: No Excuses - July 28, 2013

"The Kingdom: No Excuses"
Text: Luke 14:15-24; Luke 9:59-62
In Romans, Paul tells us that all people are "without excuse."  Jesus emphasizes this in the Banquet parable in Luke 14--reminding us that the seats left empty by those who offered excuses will be filled.  While we might immediately understand this parable as a lesson about Gentile inclusion into the Kingdom of God, it is important that we also stop to consider the ways that we might offer excuses, even today.

Sunday, July 21, 2013

The Kingdom: Beggars at the Feast - July 21, 2013

The Kingdom: Beggars at the Feast
Text: 2 Samuel 9:1-11; Romans 8:14-23; Luke 14:7-14
Jesus' advice about table manners is not merely practical social advice, but a lesson with distinctly Christian overtones.  When we consider this parable, we become aware of the ways that the Kingdom of God is structured and ordered. As we join with the other "beggars at the feast," we celebrate our adoption as children of God.

The Kingdom: The Sower Went Out to Sow - July 14, 2013

"The Kingdom: The Sower Went Out to Sow"
Text: Matthew 13:1-9, 18-32; Ecclesiastes 11:1-6; I Corinthians 3:5-9
It was the best of soil, it was the worst of soil.  But regardless of the soil, the sower goes out to sow.  Pastor Jon looks at this parable, and suggests three lessons for us: Tend your soil. Produce fruit. Sow seed.

Sunday, July 07, 2013

The Kingdom: A Pearl of Great Price - July 7, 2013

The Kingdom: A Pearl of Great Price
Text: Matthew 13:44-46; Genesis 29:15-28; Luke 14:26-30
If we are to announce the coming of the Kingdom of God, we ought to know what the Kingdom looks like.  Jesus teaches us about the Kingdom of God through parables and teachings.  Today, we look at the parable of the pearl of great price, considering our grateful response to the free gift of God's grace.

The Kingdom of God has Come Near - June 30, 2013

"The Kingdom of God has Come Near" - June 30, 2013
Text: Matthew 13:31-33; Hebrews 12:18-29; I Cor 5:18-20
Based on a message by Rev. Jerry Porter (General Superintendent of the Church of the Nazarene), Pastor Jon explores the promise of Jesus: that the Kingdom of God has come near!  Highlighting stories that were told at Nazarene General Assembly, we are reminded that we are receiving a Kingdom that cannot be shaken, and that we are the ambassadors of that Kingdom, announcing the Good News to all.

Connect. Grow. SERVE. - June 16, 2013

"Connect. Grow. SERVE."
Text: Ephesians 4:1-6, 11-16
The last of a three-part series, we explore what it means to use the right tools in the hands of the right person for the right job.  The elements of service are so tightly woven into the fabric of the Christian faith that it's essential for every believer to be utilizing their gifts and talents in service to the Master.  To do anything less is to miss out on all that He has for you.  Pastor Jon concludes the message by exploring the relationship between the three core values that we've been discussing: Connect. Grow. Serve.

Sunday, June 09, 2013

Connect. GROW. Serve - June 9, 2013

"Connect. GROW. Serve"
Text: 2 Peter 1:3-8
If we are truly connected to God, then it stands to reason that we will grow.  But Peter indicates that we can't simply sit back and expect this growth to occur, but that we must "make every effort" to add to our faith.  We also realize that we don't reach a point of "arrival" but that we have these things in "increasing measure."  All of this for the purpose of being effective and productive in the Kingdom of God.

Sunday, June 02, 2013

CONNECT. Grow. Serve. - June 2, 2013

"CONNECT. Grow. Serve."
Text: Romans 5:6-11
What is "The Church"?  The first in a three-week series, we explore our core values and mission.  Using the biblical images of a vine, the body, and a building, Pastor Jon explores what it means to be reconciled to God and to help others connect with God.  Prior to the sermon, the congregation watched this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z_4u8TRorUw

Glory in our Sufferings - May 26, 2013

"Glory in our Sufferings"
Text: Romans 5:1-5
Pastor Jon considers the themes of honor and shame, which were two of the guiding criteria in the ancient cultures. The Apostle Paul challenges to not "fit in" with the dominant culture, but to glory in our sufferings... and to know that our hope will not put us to shame.

Ashes to Fire #14: "It's a Family Thing" - May 19, 2013

Ashes to Fire #14: "It's a Family Thing"
Text: Romans 8:9-17
The celebration of Pentecost is truly "A Family Thing," as nobody else celebrates this holiday quite like Christians.  Pastor Jon explores the themes of family resemblances, family brokenness, and family restoration in this concluding sermon in the Ashes to Fire series.

Sunday, May 12, 2013

Ashes to Fire #13: "A Great High Priest" - May 12, 2013

Ashes to Fire #13: "A Great High Priest"
Text: John 17:20-26
In looking at this portion of the "High Priestly Prayer of Jesus," we are reminded that on the night Jesus was betrayed, He prayed for US.  The contents of that prayer inform the way in which we ought to live together as the Church, and the mission that we ought to be engaged in.  We are also reminded that Jesus continues to pray for us as He is seated at the right-hand of the Throne of God.

Sunday, May 05, 2013

Ashes to Fire #12: "Not Afraid" - May 5, 2013

Ashes to Fire #12: "Not Afraid"
Text: John 14:23-29
The Holy Spirit.  Peace.  Be Not Afraid.  These promises of Jesus are so intertwined that it's hard to tell where one ends and the next begins.  When we truly understand the power and presence of the Holy Spirit, made available to all people for all time, then we will walk in peace, and never be afraid.  We know that "never once did we ever walk alone."

Sunday, April 28, 2013

Ashes to Fire #11: "Love Like Jesus" - April 28, 2013

Ashes to Fire #11: "Love Like Jesus"
Text: John 13:31-35
In light of the New Covenant established on the night that Jesus was betrayed, we need to take a serious look at the New Commandment given by Jesus - to love others as Jesus loves us.  This sort of love is to be the defining hallmark of the Christ-follower, for the world will know that we are Christians because of our love.  In this sermon, Pastor Jon explores what this love looks like, and how it is lived out in the new covenant community.

Sunday, April 21, 2013

Ashes to Fire #10: In the Arms of the Shepherd - April 21, 2013

Ashes to Fire #10: "In the Arms of the Shepherd"
Text: I Thessalonians 5:1-11; John 10:22-30; Psalm 46
Following the tragic events of this week, Pastor Jon considers the "illusion of security" that we sometimes cling to.  The texts today remind us that we can't find "peace and safety" in our government, economy, military, or anything else in this world which is bound to fail.  When all else fails, we are reminded that the Good Shepherd will shelter us, and that no one can snatch us out of His hand.

Sunday, April 14, 2013

Ashes to Fire #9: Under Construction - April 14, 2013

Ashes to Fire #9: "Under Construction"
Text: John 21:1-19
We recognize that we are often like Jesus' disciples: even if we don't deny Him like Peter, or betray Him like Judas, we are often like the others - silent, doubting, confused, scattered, and afraid.  And like the seven disciples in today's lesson, we sometimes return to "business as usual" - the familiar and comfortable routines we knew before we met Jesus.  Today's sermon reminds us that Jesus lovingly pursues us, even though we're still under construction.

Sunday, April 07, 2013

Annual Meeting: "Now Thank We All Our God" - April 7, 2013

Annual Meeting: "Now Thank We All Our God"
Text: I Corinthians 3:5-9; Luke 17:11-19
Before we rush ahead into the "New Thing" that God is doing, it's important to return to the Savior, praising Him for what He has done, is doing, and is going to do.  In his Annual Report, Pastor Jon highlights some of the great things that have happened this year, reminding us that this is not the story of any one pastor, board member, teacher, or member; but the story of God Himself.  He will build His church, and the gates of Hades will not prevail against it (Mt. 16:18).

Sunday, March 31, 2013

Ashes to Fire 7: "Breaking the Chains" - March 31, 2013

Ashes to Fire 7: "Breaking the Chains"
Text: I Corinthians 15:20-26; Isaiah 65:17-25; Luke 24:1-12
Pastor Jon explores the imagery of bondage throughout scripture and literature, considering the ways in which Christ breaks the chains of injustice, sin, and death.  Easter reminds us that Christ has already defeated the last enemy, death itself.  In so doing, we can be confident that all other enemies are defeated and all other chains are broken.

Sunday, March 24, 2013

Ashes to Fire #6: "Not a Rock" - March 24, 2013

Ashes to Fire #6: "Not a Rock"
Text: Luke 19:28-40
As we explore the themes of the Triumphal Entry, we are confronted with the question of whether we accept Jesus on His terms, or attempt to define Him to meet our own expectations.  Did the "Hosannas" fade because the road was too tough... the cross too difficult... or because Jesus wasn't who they expected Him to be?  As disciples, it is our job to praise God regardless of the circumstances.  If we remain silent, then the rocks will cry out.

Monday, March 18, 2013

Ashes to Fire #5: Prodigal Mary - March 17, 2013

Ashes to Fire #5: Prodigal Mary John 12:1-11
In a Gospel Lesson full of literary devices, we consider the ways in which Mary's lavish gift helps us to give of ourselves fully to our Lord.  Our extravagant worship should always be in response to our understanding that God has given everything for us.

Sunday, March 10, 2013

Ashes to Fire #4: Embraced by Grace - March 10, 2013

Ashes to Fire #4: "Embraced by Grace"
Text: Luke 15:1-2, 11-32
Victor Hugo provides a powerful way to look at the characters in today's Gospel lesson.  From Les Miserables, the characters of Javert and Valjean help us to understand the lives of the elder and younger son in the parable of the Prodigal Son.  One has been forever changed after being embraced by grace, while the other is bound by rules and legalism.  As we remember our own encounter with God's grace, we are reminded to extend that same embrace to others--that they might somehow catch a taste of the transforming grace of God.

Ashes to Fire #3: Keep Short Accounts - March 3, 2013

Ashes to Fire #3: "Keep Short Accounts"
Text: Luke 13:1-9
When tragedy strikes, there is no shortage of "Christian spokespeople" prepared to declare that the tragedy was somehow indicative of God's judgment on a particular person or group of people.  And yet, when people ask Jesus about tragic events, he (politely and tactfully) tells them to MYOB - Mind Your Own Business.  In this message, Pastor Jon considers the ways in which we ought to primarily be concerned about nurturing our own spiritual growth, keeping short accounts with God and with others.

Ashes to Fire #2: "Jerusalem, Jerusalem!" - February 24, 2013

Ashes to Fire #2: "Jerusalem, Jerusalem"
Text: Luke 13:31-35
As Jesus moves steadfastly toward Jerusalem, he does so fearlessly, knowing that the timing if his death is entirely in the hands of the Father.  Lamenting the broken systems and lost people in Jerusalem, Jesus continues to make intentional decisions which lead to his arrest and execution.  And yet, we still get a sense for the Father-heart of God, as Jesus longs to gather under his wings the very people who will seek to do him harm.  In a reversal of our English idiom about the fox guarding the hen house, here we see the hen walking straight into the lair of the fox.

Ashes to Fire #1: Wilderness Survival Guide - February 17, 2013

Ashes to Fire #1: "Wilderness Survival Guide"
Luke 4:1-14
As we begin our wilderness adventure with Jesus, we consider the ways in which His identity formed the foundation from which He faced temptation.  Jesus knew who He was, whose He was, and Who went with Him.  In the same manner, as dearly loved children of God, we survive the wilderness by being firmly rooted in our identity and the knowledge that the Holy Spirit goes with us.

Transfiguration: Going Back Down the Mountain - February 10, 2013

"Transfiguration: Going Back Down the Mountain"
Text: 2 Corinthians 3:12-4:2
Concluding the Season After Epiphany, the Transfiguration reminds us that we meet God in order to be transformed; that we go up the mountain in order to return to the valley; and that we enjoy the privilege of a personal relationship with God.  As we go back down the mountain into the valley, we are to be the representation of God--ambassadors to the world.

Missio Dei - February 3, 2013

"Missio Dei"
Text: Luke 5:1-11
Jesus invites Peter, James and John to partner with Him in fulfilling the Mission of God.  It is the same call that is issued to every follower of Jesus, and yet we have often been content to sit back and wait for the world to come to us.  We are reminded of the response of Isaiah: "Here am I, send me."

The Year of Jubilee - January 27, 2013

"The Year of Jubilee"
Text: Luke 4:14-21
In proclaiming the Year of the Lord's Favor, Jesus doesn't seem to be talking about land ownership and freedom for slaves as much as He is talking about spiritual poverty & blindness, and setting people free from the law of sin and death.  In a move that angers His listeners, Jesus extends this Year of Jubilee to all people, not just the Jews.  What would it mean to press the "giant reset button" on your life?  What does it mean to truly understand that your future is not controlled by your past?

Discipline of Celebration - January 20, 2013

"Discipline of Celebration"
Text: John 2:1-11
Jesus continues to demonstrate obedience and submission as His mother asks Him to perform His first miracle at the wedding in Cana. In turning water into wine, Jesus not only reminds us that He has power over the material elements in this world, but that He is the full embodiment of the God who celebrates with His children. Jesus doesn't cut any corners, but turns the water into the best wine imaginable, reminding us that we can bring the ordinary "stuff" of our lives to be transformed into something extra-ordinary for God's glory.

Voluntary Submission in the Kingdom of God - January 13, 2013

"Voluntary Submission in the Kingdom of God"
Text: Philippians 2:1-11; Luke 3:15-22
Pastor Jon looks at the Baptism of our Lord through the lens of the Kenosis hymn found in Philippians 2.  By considering Baptism as a voluntary act of submission, we recognize that in order to live into our baptism will entail great risk as we subvert the kingdoms of this world.

Epiphany: Pursuing the Revelation of Christ - January 6, 2013

"Epiphany: Pursuing the Revelation of Christ"
Text: Isaiah 60:1-6, Matthew 2:1-12
While much of our traditions about the Magi are based in speculation and legend, we can make some educated guesses about their journey and the sacrifices that they made.  These educated guesses help us determine some lessons that we can learn from the Wise Men in our pursuit of Jesus.

Family Resemblances (#4): Love - December 23, 2012

Family Resemblances (#4): "Love"
Text: I Corinthians 13
And now these three remain: Faith, Hope and Love.  But the greatest of these is Love. - I Cor 13:13.  Pastor Jon concludes our Advent Series with a look at what it means to be shaped by Godly Love. Paul tells us that nothing else that we do will last, and even the good things that we do are fruitless if not for Love.  How will they know you are a Christian?  What token will you give?  What sign will you show?

Sunday, December 16, 2012

Family Resemblances (#3): Joy - December 16, 2012

Family Resemblances (#3): Joy
Text: Psalm 126, Luke 3:7-18, Philippians 4:4-13
Exploring the tension between Advent Hope and our present circustances, Pastor Jon identifies the need for Joy and Contentment.  Even as we know it's acceptable to "sow in tears," we rejoice that Christ identified with those tears, that the Light of the World came down into darkness, and that He walks with us even through the valley.

Sunday, December 09, 2012

Family Resemblances (#2): Peace - December 9, 2012

Family Resemblances (#2): "Peace"
Text: Matthew 5:38-48; 2 Corinthians 5:18-20
During this second week of Advent, Pastor Jon explores what it means to reflect the life of the Prince of Peace.  Jesus not only came to bring a message of peace on earth, but came in a manner consistent with that message. What does it mean for you to be an ambassador of God's Peace this Christmas season?

Sunday, December 02, 2012

Family Resemblances (#1): Hope - December 2, 2012

Family Resemblances (#1): Hope
Text: Zechariah 9:9-12
This Advent, Pastor Jon looks at some of the "Family Resemblances" that ought to be found in the family of Christ-followers.  We begin our series with a look at what it means to be a "prisoner of hope."  Christ-followers ought not be characterized by hand-wringing and head-shaking, but with a calm assurance that Christ is bringing about His Kingdom in all of its fullness.

Christ the King: Consider the Cost - November 25, 2012

"Christ the King: Consider the Cost"
Text: Luke 14:25-35
Christ the King Sunday is an annual reminder that Christ is to be lord of our lives throughout the year.  Pastor Jon looks at some of the hard teachings of Jesus as he journeys toward Jerusalem and the cross.  Have you considered the cost of discipleship?  The invitation is given to all, but the costs of being a subject in the Kingdom are great.

All for What? - November 18, 2012

All for What?
Text: Mark 13:1-8
In the second of this two-part message on Mark 12:38 - 13:8, Pastor Jon further explores what it must have meant for the widow to tragically give her two last coins for a failed system that was condemned for destruction.  We are reminded to make sure that we give of ourselves to the things that will last--the things of the Kingdom of God.  While buildings and programs may be useful tools to build the kingdom, they are only a means to an end.  The kingdoms of this world will pass away, and all that will remain is the Kingdom of God.

Giving All - November 11, 2012

Giving All Mark 12:38-44
Placing this passage in its broader context helps us to understand that the primary message wasn't about the widow's sacrificial giving, but about the exploitation by the Pharisees.  Pastor Jon takes a closer look at this passage, suggesting that churches and religious institutions have used these verses in precisely the ways that Jesus is condemning.  "Giving All" is about more than just money.

E100 #21: Where They Need No Sun - October 28, 2012

E100 #21: "Where They Need No Sun"
Text: Revelation 21-22
At the conclusion of our five-month journey through E100, Pastor Jon considers the themes of light and darkness.  Sometimes we need to turn to the end of the Story to be reminded of its grand and glorious conclusion!  And in the in-between-time, we are reminded that we are the light of the world.

E100 #20: FaithDeeds - October 21, 2012

E100 #20: "FaithDeeds - October 21, 2012"
Text: James 2:14-26
During our Faith Promise for Missions Convention, Pastor Jon takes a closer look at this passage from the book of James.  Our actions, our words, our deeds, and even our financial decisions are a reflection of our faith in Christ, and the ways in which we have been transformed by the character and nature of the heart of God.

E100 #19: Rightly Dividing the Word - October 14, 2012

E100 #19: "Rightly Dividing the Word"
Text: 2 Timothy 2:15
The apostle Paul's encouraging letters to Timothy, a young church leader in Ephesus, have instructed local pastors for centuries; however, the advice to Timothy contains a wealth of information for Jesus' followers who desire to share God's good news.  Those who are chosen to lead our churches are not the only ones who minister in our communities.  When we believe in the universal love of God we can become the shadow of Jesus on the dusty roads of our villages.

E100 #18: The Fruit of the Spirit - October 7, 2012

E100 #18: "The Fruit of the Spirit"
Text: Galatians 5:16-26
In light of the multiple directives in scripture to "produce fruit," Pastor Jon looks at this familiar passage from Galatians.  Paul instructs us, not to keep score and a list of dos and don'ts, but to live by the Spirit and keep in step with the Spirit.  If we are rooted in God's Word, drinking deeply from the Living Water, and abiding in Christ, then we can be confident that the Spirit will produce fruit within us.

E100 #17: Running on Fumes - September 30, 2012

E100 #17: "Running on Fumes"
Text: Acts 9:1-19
The story of Paul is exhausting!  We struggle to keep up with the passion and determination of this Apostle.  And yet, we recognize that Paul did not accomplish all of that by his own strength and ability, but because of a constant reliance upon the power and presence of the Holy Spirit.

E100 #16: Homecoming - Koinonia - September 23, 2012

E100 #16: "Homecoming - Koinonia"
Text: Acts 2:42-47
On this Homecoming Sunday and 45th Anniversary Celebration, Pastor Jon helps us to consider how the local church should be shaped in the Image of the Triune God.  Since the early church, communities of Christians have been defined by Koinonia - Communion by Intimate Participation.  We conclude our service by welcoming 6 new members to our congregation.

E100 #15: You Are What You Eat - September 16, 2012

E100 #15: "You Are What You Eat"
Text: Luke 22:7-34
Our text today highlights the dichotomy between the Kingdom Narrative and the narratives of this world.  While the disciples are attracted to money, power and greatness; Jesus demonstrates a Kingdom built on poverty, brokenness and servanthood.  As we gather around the Table, we are formed and shaped by the grace that we find there.

E100 #14: Miracles 101: Ephphatha - September 9, 2012

E100 #14: "Miracles 101: Ephphatha"
Text: Mark 7:32-37
The miracles of Jesus are examples of God's spiritual intervention in our lives. Although we may not hear or see what happened, we are still changed. Pastor Gloria highlights Gospel stories of individuals whose response to unexpected release demonstrated their belief about the Source of their miraculous provision.

E100 #13: Who Is My Neighbor? - September 2, 2012

E100 #13: "Who Is My Neighbor?" Text: Luke 10:25-37
The Good Samaritan gives us a concrete example of how we ought to reflect the character and nature of God.  After looking at a couple of lessons from the parable itself, Pastor Jon takes a closer look at the context of the parable, suggesting that the Bible often calls us to specific behaviors, regardless of the behavior of others.

E100 #12: Stepping Down into Darkness - August 26, 2012

E100 #12: "Stepping Down into Darkness"
Text: John 1:1-18
By celebrating Christmas in August, we hope to get a fresh reading of the Christmas texts, hearing again what it meant for Jesus to empty Himself and step down into our darkness.  The Incarnation provides us with a model of how we ought to live, walking through dark valleys, moving into the neighborhood, and embodying the Kingdom of God to all we meet.

Sunday, August 19, 2012

E100 #11: Broken Cisterns - August 19, 2012

E100 #11: "Broken Cisterns"
Text: Jeremiah 2:1-12; 31:31-34
After providing an overview of Jeremiah's life, Pastor Jon explores the words of Jeremiah, which reveal to us the character and nature of the heart of God.  God continues to remember His people, even though they have forgotten Him and traded the Glory of the Living God for gods made of wood and stone.  Instead of drinking deeply at the springs of living water, they have built broken cisterns that cannot hold water.

E100 #10: Mindful of our Frame

E100 #10: "Mindful of our Frame"
Text: Psalm 103
Bonhoeffer reminds us that there is no forgiveness without repentance.  This morning a closer look at Psalm 103 reminds us that God is a god of both justice and mercy, and that confession is telling God the truth that He already knows.

E100 #9: When the Brook Dries Up - July 29, 2012

E100 #9: "When the Brook Dries Up"
Text: I Kings 17:1-16
Alluding to the business parable, "Who Moved My Cheese?" Pastor Jon takes a look at how we deal with change in our lives.  When everything seems to be going smootly, we find it easy to trust God. But when the brook dries up, we are tempted to be angry, or live in denial, or be paralyzed by fear.  Instead, like Elijah, we must listen to the voice of God and trust that He can redeem the situation.

E100 #8: Be Not Conformed - July 22, 2012

E100 #8: "Be Not Conformed"
Text: I Samuel 8:1-20
As we continue our journey through scripture, we consider what it means for the Israelites to have wanted to "be like other nations," and to have a king.  As we consider the implications for us today, we recognize that not only are we tempted to be like the world around us, but that our churches are tempted to try to imitate other churches, and we are often tempted to try to be like other Christians.  Instead, God calls us to fulfill our unique and special role within the Kingdom of God.

E100 #7: Our Kinsman Redeemer - July 15, 2012

E100 #7: "Our Kinsman Redeemer"
Text: Ruth 1-4
Pastor Jon offers a brief devotional on the book of Ruth, highlighting that we care for widows, orphans and outsiders because we are all widows, orphans and outsiders.  It is only because of our Kinsman Redeemer that we can consider ourselves part of the Family of God.

Sunday, July 08, 2012

E100 #6: Consecrate Yourselves - July 8, 2012

E100 #6 - "Consecrate Yourselves"
Text: Joshua 3:1-13
By exploring several texts, Pastor Jon considers the themes of preparation and consecration.  We considered the possiblity that we may not see God's hand at work because we are not properly prepared to encounter an Almighty and Holy God.

Sunday, July 01, 2012

E100 #5: God Remembers - July 1, 2012

E100 #5: "God Remembers"
Text: Exodus 3
As we explore the narrative of the Exodus, we are encouraged with the reminder that God remembers His children, even though they appear to have forgotten Him.

E100 #4: Higher Ways - June 24, 2012

E100 #4: "Higher Ways"
Text: Genesis 45:3-8; 50:15-21
The story of Joseph reminds us that God will keep his promise to his people, and that He watches over those of integrity and faithfulness.  At the same time, we're reminded that our current situations may not make much sense until we can look back and see God's hand at work.  After all, God's ways are not our ways, and His thoughts are not our thoughts.

E100 #3: Promises, Promises - June 17, 2012

E100 #3: "Promises, Promises"
Text: Genesis 22:1-19
Abraham gives us an example of someone who was willing to trust that God would keep His promises.  Despite Abraham's spotty history at keeping the covenant, we recognize that he was willing to offer Isaac back as the firstfruits of the promise.  The principle of firstfruits is a reminder that God is the rightful owner of all that we are and claim to possess.

E100 #2: Living Stones - June 10, 2012

E100 #2: "Living Stones"
Text: Genesis 11:1-9
As we begin our journey through the Grand Narrative of Scripture, we explore what it means to be created in the Image of God, and how humanity has continued to live out a tarnished reflection of that Image. This week, Pastor Jon looks at the Tower of Babel, exploring the nature of the particular sin which led to the building of the tower. Instead of building a tower to our own glory, we are exhorted by the words of the Westminster Shorter Catechism - that "the chief end of man is to glorify God, and to enjoy Him forever."

E100 #1: A Peculiar Story: The Story that Shapes Us - June 3, 2012

E100 #1: "A Peculiar Story: The Story that Shapes Us"
Text: 2 Timothy 3:10-17
Join us on the E100 Challenge, as we journey through 100 Essential Bible Lessons this summer.  Today, Pastor Jon introduces the series, and shares about the ways that the people of God are shaped by the Story of God.  We explore what it means to read the Bible formationally instead of informationally.  Learn more about our journey through E100 at http://e100capenazarene.blogspot.com.

A Peculiar Companion - May 27, 2012

"A Peculiar Companion"
Text: Ezekiel 37:1-14
On Pentecost, we are reminded that Christ came not only so we could have eternal life, but that we could have abundant life in the here and now. Pastor Jon takes a look at Ezekiel's vision of the Valley of Dry Bones, and reminds us that God desires to breathe His Spirit into our lives, even though we may feel cut off and dried up.

A Peculiar Commission - May 20, 2012

"A Peculiar Commission"
Text: Acts 1:1-11
The last words of Jesus to the disciples were a commission to be witnesses to the whole world.  That commission has been handed down from disciple to disciple to disciple, until it has reached you.  What sort of a witness are you?  Who is depending on you to be the next link in the chain so they can come to know Christ?

A Peculiar Condition - May 13, 2012

"A Peculiar Condition"
Text: John 17:6-19
In the High Priestly Prayer of Jesus, recorded in John 17, we discover that Jesus not only prays for the disciples, but he prays for us as well! In this prayer, we also learn of our peculiar condition--to be in the world but not of it. As subjects in the Kingdom of God, we must be careful of the "Caesars" that would demand our allegiance, and instead make sure that our identity is found in Christ alone.

A Peculiar Commandment - May 6, 2012

"A Peculiar Commandment"
Text: John 15:9-17
Pastor Jon continues to unpack what it means to be "A Peculiar People" by looking at some of Jesus' teachings.  This week we explore the "New Commandment" that Jesus gives the disciples on the night he was betrayed.  As we discover what it means to "love as Jesus loved," we learn that this is a very specific commandment, calling us to be shaped by the cross of Christ.

Saturday, May 19, 2012

A Peculiar Connection - April 29, 2012

"A Peculiar Connection"
Text: John 15:1-8
Jesus teaches that if we are connected to the vine, we will bear fruit. Pastor Jon explores this peculiar connection, highlighting some of the lessons we can learn from the grapevine, and what it means to talk about "Abiding in Christ."

A Peculiar Commitment - April 22, 2012

"A Peculiar Commitment"
Text: John 10:1-18
As we understand what it means to follow the Good Shepherd, we are challenged by the knowledge that He has a peculiar commitment to the sheep... and calls us to have a peculiar commitment to Him and to each other.

Annual Meeting: A Peculiar People - April 15, 2012

"Annual Meeting: A Peculiar People"
Text: I Peter 2:4-12
At our Annual Meeting we give thanks to God for the year we have completed and we look forward into the future, anticipating what He might choose to do in and through us. Join us as we celebrate the God who is making "All Things New," and hear the ways in which the people of the Cape Elizabeth Church of the Nazarene are "A Peculiar People."

Easter: The Great Reversal - April 8, 2012

"Easter: The Great Reversal" Text: Psalm 118:1-2, 14-24
On this Easter Sunday, Pastor Jon suggests that the truth of the matter is revealed to us on Good Friday…. all of creation is hushed on Black Saturday, holding its collective breath… and on Resurrection morning, Jesus breathes out this word: BUT. And the Great Reversal begins. Sins are forgiven. Addictions are broken. Marriages are restored. Hope is renewed. Purpose is discovered. And death itself begins to work backward.

Lent (#6): Not a Fan - April 1, 2012

Lent (#6): "Not a Fan"
Text: Mark 1:1-11
On this Palm Sunday, Pastor Jon reminds us that Jesus doesn’t call us to be fans.  He calls us to be followers.  He calls us to be disciples.  He calls us to make an unwavering commitment to follow Him wherever He goes… even to the cross.

Lent (#5): Confession is Good for the Soul - March 25, 2012

Lent (#5): "Confession is Good for the Soul"
Text: Psalm 51
Confession is good for the soul.  Confession allows us to remove our masks… and to be open and honest before God and before each other.  Confession reminds us of the “Good News of Repentance,” that there is hope for a better way.

Lent (#4): "Thou Shalt Not Whine" - March 18, 2012

Lent (#4): "Thou Shalt Not Whine"
Text: Psalm 107
Throughout the Old Testament wilderness narrative, we discover a community which grumbles, complains, and whines about their situation.  In contrast, when we read the narrative of Jesus in the wilderness, we discover faithfulness and contentment.  In the New Covenant Community, we ought to find Christ-followers who continually adopt the posture of praise and thanksgiving.

Lent (#3): Sweeter Than Honey - March 11, 2012

Lent (#3): "Sweeter Than Honey"
Text: Psalm 19
C. S. Lewis calls this psalm, “the greatest poem in the Psalter and one of the greatest lyrics in the world.”  As we look at the Psalm, we consider that the primary reason God's Word is "sweeter than honey" is because it reveals the nature and character of God.  In essence, it is through the Written Word that we come to know the Living Word.

Lent (#2): Praising in the Desert - March 4, 2012

Lent (#2): "Praising in the Desert"
Text: Psalm 22
Possibly one of the most "schizophrenic" psalms in all of scripture, Psalm 22 reminds us that even in the midst of great suffering we are to praise God.  David.  Esther.  Jesus.  Each one an example of someone who might feel abandoned by God, and yet gives praise to God in advance of the deliverance they are certain they will receive.

Lent (#1): Where God Isn't - February 26, 2012

Lent (#1): "Where God Isn't"
Text: Psalm 139
If there are places on earth that seem particularly close to the heavens, then it is only reasonable to suggest that there may be places which seem particularly distant.  And yet, as the Psalmist is quick to point out, even if we make our bed in the depths... God is present.

On the Mountain - February 19, 2012

"On the Mountain"
Text: Mark 2:2-9
On this Transfiguration Sunday, we explore the idea of "thin places" on earth, where the realm of the Divine seems to intersect with the mundane in an extraordinary way.  Unlike Peter, we must ignore the temptation to package up the experience, controlling and marketing it to others... but that when we find Jesus, we find transformation.

The Great Equalizer - February 12, 2012

"The Great Equalizer"
Text: Mark 1:40-45
Pastor Jon explores a couple of texts related to leprosy.  We are reminded that God has the power to cleanse lepers... and to forgive us of our sins.  The great equalizer is neither leprosy nor cancer, but the sin that so easy entangles us.

The Good News of Repentance - January 22, 2012

"The Good News of Repentance"
Text: Mark 1:14-40
Repent.  It’s an important word in Christianity… but it’s a word that carries an awful lot of baggage… both inside and outside the Church.  Pastor Jon attempts to get through the some of baggage, exploring how we might see the call to repentance as a call full of hope and optimism.

Seeking the God who Sees - January 15, 2012

"Seeking the God who Sees"
Text: John 1:43-51
Hagar.  Samuel.  Nathaniel.  We are reminded that we are seeking the God who sees--the God who sought us before we knew enough to seek after Him.  The God who saw Hagar by the spring in the desert is the same God who called out to Samuel in the middle of the night, and the same God who saw Nathaniel under the tree.

New Years: What are you Waiting For? - January 1, 2012

"New Years: What are you Waiting For?"
Text: Luke 2:22-38
Pastor Jon concludes our Advent and Christmas series with a look at the accounts of Anna and Simeon. After considering their patient faithfulness, we are invited to consider the ways in which others have demonstrated those qualities to us, and the ways we can be a Simeon or an Anna to the children in our lives. What are you waiting for?

Advent (#4): The Promise Draws Near - December 18, 2011

"Advent (#4): The Promise Draws Near"
Text: Luke 1:5-25, 57-79
Imagine… if you could only speak one sentence, once a year!  Talk about choosing your words wisely!? How would you choose what to say, if you could only speak one sentence, once a year?  How would you economize your words?  What priorities would drive your communication?  What would you say?  And what would you choose to leave unsaid?

Advent (#3): Fixing our Eyes - December 11, 2011

"Advent (#3): Fixing our Eyes - December 11, 2011"
Text: Hebrews 11:1-2, 32-40; 12:1-3
It seems that the great stories in the Bible are the ones where God intervenes—where new life is brought forth out of barrenness... where the blind see... the deaf hear... the mute shout... and the lame leap for joy. But what happens when the miracle doesn’t come? What happens when the blind remain blind?  Or the deaf stay deaf... or the mute are forever unable to speak?  What happens when you pray and wait… and wait and pray... and God doesn’t seem to answer your prayer?

Advent (#2): In the Meantime - December 4, 2011

"Advent (#2): In the Meantime - December 4, 2011"
Text:  Genesis 29-30
As we look at the story of Jacob being tricked by his uncle, we learn about waiting.  One of our Advent lessons today is that we wait like Jacob waited… we live out our lives—working for the Kingdom of God... because of our love for God.  In our case, of course, we’re not trying to earn anything—instead, our labors for the Master are in response to what He has already and graciously done for us.  And as we fill our waiting with our working, we find that it seems like only a few days because of our love for God.

Advent (#1): Waiting for the Promise - November 27, 2011

"Advent (#1): Waiting for the Promise"
Text: Genesis 11-21
This Advent season, Pastor Jon tells stories about people who had to wait.  As we hear these stories, we identify with them, because each of us is waiting for God to break in upon our circumstances, to heal our brokenness, and to fully redeem our lives. We look forward to Him bringing light into our darkness, and life into our barrenness.

Paul (#16): Finishing the Race - November 20, 2011

"Paul (#16): Finishing the Race"
Text: Acts 27-28
Pastor Jon concludes our 16-week study on Paul's life by looking at his final journey to Rome.  Even though Luke doesn't give us the details of the end of Paul's life, we can infer that he finished well.  Preaching and writing while in prison, Paul made the most of each moment.

Paul (#15): Appealing to a Higher Court - November 13, 2011

"Paul (#15): Appealing to a Higher Court"
Text: Acts 22:22-26:32
In broad strokes, Pastor Jon retells some of the stories related to Paul's arrests, trials, and imprisonments.  Even as Paul continues to appeal to Caesar, we recognize that ultimately we appeal, not to the courts of men, but to an even Higher Authority.

Paul (#14): Thy Will Be Done - November 6, 2011

"Paul (#14): Thy Will Be Done - November 6, 2011"
Text: Acts 21-22
In looking at this chapter of Paul's life, Pastor Jon suggests that sin is when you put yourself in the place of God as Savior, Lord, and Judge.  Even as Paul set his direction toward Jerusalem, some Godly people were attempting to convince him otherwise.  And yet, Paul's choices echo the words of Jesus' prayer: "Thy will be done."

Paul (#13): Famous Last Words - October 23, 2011

"Paul (#13): Famous Last Words" Text: Acts 20:13-38
In this farewell speech to the Ephesian elders, we recognize the same urgency that was driving Paul as he preached through the night in Troas.  As we read the sermon, we get a glimpse into Paul’s heart, and discover the qualities of humility, integrity, and faithfulness.

Paul (#12): Disrupting our Economies and Allegiances - October 16, 2011

"Paul (#12): Disrupting our Economies and Allegiances"
Text: Acts 19
Today, we continue our journey through the book of Acts, as Paul visits Ephesus.  And we’ll find some people who got so riled up by the Gospel that they stood in the city square and shouted for 2 hours straight.  North American Christians are reminded to reevaluate the items in our lives that give us security—whether it be our jobs, our health, our national security and safety, or even our families.  For ultimately, none of those things begin to compare with the security offered through a relationship with God through Jesus Christ.

Paul (#11): Partnering in the Gospel - October 2, 2011

"Paul (#11): Partnering in the Gospel"
Text: Acts 18:1-28
The Kingdom of God really is a partnership… a team event.  It’s not just about Paul being a "Lone Ranger," but about Paul playing his part on God’s team.  And in this case, God tells Paul that His team is even bigger than Paul can see.  And that Paul doesn’t need to be afraid, because he’s on God’s team!

Paul (#10): Greatly Distressed - September 25, 2011

"Paul (#10): Greatly Distressed"
Text: Acts 17:16-34
The phrase "greatly distressed" is used quite a few times in scripture--often indicating a distress at sin, idolatry, or a situation that seemed beyond hope.  And yet, sometimes we get "greatly distressed" about things that probably shouldn't receive that much of our attention.  Even as Paul is "greatly distressed" at the idols on Mars Hills, we ought to be "greatly distressed" about sin in our own lives and brokenness in the world around us.

Homecoming: Zebedee's Fishing Company - September 18, 2011

"Homecoming: Zebedee's Fishing Company"
Text: Matthew 4:12-25
Former Pastor Jeff Barker offers this Homecoming message about "Zebedee's Fishing Company."  Instead of following the call of James and John, Pastor Jeff explores what it may have been like for their father Zebedee.  What does faithfulness look like when we're called to stay at home--casting the nets, catching the fish, cleaning the fish, selling the fish, and mending the nets?

Paul (#8): Set Free - September 4, 2011

"Paul (#8): Set Free"
Text: Acts 16:16-34
Pastor Jon juxtaposes Psalm 22 against the familiar story of Paul and Silas in prison, suggesting the importance of being "Set Free" from our circumstances by praising God even in the midst of them.  Even as Paul continues to learn about the boundless reach of the Gospel (this time, even to demon-possessed slave girls), he also demonstrates true freedom, even while in physical bondage.

Paul (#7): Lydia - August 21, 2011

"Paul (#7): Lydia"
Text: Acts 16:6-15
If God can use David and Solomon, and Peter and Paul, and John Mark and Timothy, then He can certainly use you.  And He can certainly use the leading lady in today’s story (Acts 16:16-34).  Pastor Jon suggests that this may be the lesson that Paul needed to learn, as the Gospel spread to (and through) one of the most unlikely candidates.

Paul (#6): Christian Unity - August 7, 2011

"Paul (#6): Christian Unity"
Text: Acts 15:36-16:5
Pastor Jon takes a look at the "Sharp Disagreement" between Paul and Barnabas at the end of Acts chapter 15.  As we trace the story, we learn not only that God can use our brokenness, but that reconciliation continues to be possible, even for relationships that seem broken beyond all hope.

Paul (#5): No Other Name - July 31, 2011

"Paul (#5): No Other Name"
Text: Acts 14:8-20
Paul is always very careful to make sure that people don't worship him, but the God that he serves.  Pastor Jon takes a look at some of Paul's teachings on this--and an event which was probably quite formative in Paul's early ministry.  Together, we learn that there is no other name under heaven and earth by which we must be saved.

Paul (#4): To the Jews and then to the Gentiles - July 24, 2011

"Paul (#4): To the Jews and then to the Gentiles"
Text: Acts 13:13-52
Like a wildfire spreading uncontrollably in the forest, Paul's missionary work begins to spread--and not just to the Jews.  Instead, it begins popping up in the least expected places: among the gentiles.  Despite persecution and opposition, Paul and Barnabus continue to take the Name of Jesus with them, wherever they go.

Paul (#3): So Send I You - July 17, 2011

"Paul (#3): So Send I You"
Sermon Text: Acts 11:19-30; 12:25-13:3
Despite Paul's miraculous conversion, despite his incredible intellect and training, and despite his ability to preach, teach, and argue a point, Paul didn’t immediately become the church leader, missionary, and author that he eventually grew into.  This week, Pastor Jon explores the period of waiting prior to Paul's comissioning by the Church.

Paul (#2): Joining the Underdogs - July 10, 2011

Paul (#2): Joining the Underdogs
Text: Acts 9:19b-31
As we continue our journey with Paul, we discover it was not all a bed of roses. We might expect that life got easy for Paul after he joined the right team, but it’s simply not the case. If anything, life suddenly became extremely difficult. For while God takes away our sins, He doesn’t always take away the burdens of life. He doesn’t promise to solve all of our problems, but He does promise to walk with us as we travel the journey.

Paul (#1): Never the Same Again - June 26, 2011

"Paul (#1): Never the Same Again"
Text: Acts 9:1-19a
We begin a new journey, studying the life of Paul as recorded in the book of Acts. We begin with a look at Paul's conversion experience, and reminder that Christ and the Church are so inseparable that to persecute one is to persecute the other. Paul's life reminds us that God can save anyone. As we embark on this journey with Paul, we are reminded that an encounter with Jesus is life-changing, and that we can never be the same again.

Discovering Jesus in the Church - June 12, 2011

"Discovering Jesus in the church"
Text: Acts 2:1-21
Pastor Jon concludes our Easter series on "Discovering Jesus" with this Pentecost message. As God's Spirit came down over the Church, we are reminded of similar events in the Old Testament: creation, the giving of the law, and the dedication of the temple. In the Church, God reveals the "new thing" that He is doing, as the Church is the visible expression of the Body of Christ for the world today. It is through the work of the Church that we came to know Christ... and it is through the work of the Spirit-empowered Church that the world will come to know Him.

Discovering Jesus in Scripture - June 5, 2011

"Discovering Jesus in Scripture"
Text: Luke 24:44-53
On Ascension Sunday, we are reminded that Jesus showed the disciples that He is revealed in Scripture: the Law, the Prophets, and the Psalms (writings). Pastor Jon talks about a proper understanding of scripture, and how we are to read all of scripture through the lens of the person and work of Jesus. All of scripture is useful because it reveals Jesus to us, And when we keep our primary attention on the most important parts of the story, the rest of Scripture shifts into proper focus.

Discovering the Father through the Son - May 29, 2011

"Discovering the Father through the Son"
Text: John 14:1-14
As Christians, we don't worship a nebulous, nameless God... the god that is often invoked by our pledge, on our money, or during a civic prayer. We worship the Trinity: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. We don't have to guess what God is like, because the Father is made known to us through the Son--the exact representation of God's glory. Pastor Jon continues our Easter series, looking at what it means to discover God and to make Him known.

Discovering Jesus in the Flock - May 22, 2011

"Discovering Jesus in the Flock"
Text: John 10:1-12
Continuing in our series this Easter season, Pastor Jon looks at this familiar passage from John, considering that we also discover Jesus in community, and that the Good Shepherd desires to bring the sheep into the fold. As we live in relationship with one another, we discover Christ at work in us. We are His people. We are the sheep of His pasture

Discovering Jesus on the Road - May 15, 2011

"Discovering Jesus on the Road"
Text: Luke 24:13-35
If we look closely at the disciples on the road to Emmaus, we may recognize ourselves on the road--unable to recognize the answers that are before our own eyes. Through this account, Luke reminds us that we can discover Jesus in the ordinariness of life... on the road... in our doubts... in our disappointments... in our questions... and in the breaking of bread.

Seeing is Believing - May 8, 2011

"Seeing is Believing"
Text: John 20:19-31
Pastor Jon explores the familiar story of "Doubting" Thomas against the backdrop of the commonly-stated belief, "seeing is believing." Our faith is not simply an examination of the evidence provided, neither is it merely mental assent to a series of doctrines or propositional statements. Ultimately faith requires that we believe, in order that we might "see with the eyes of our heart."

Annual Meeting: All Things New - May 1, 2011

"Annual Meeting: All Things New"
Texts: Various, including: Ephesians 5;, Isaiah 6:1-3, 9:2, 26:19, 43:16-21; Revelation 21:1-5
Together, we celebrate the God who is making all things new, breathing new life into this congregation, and building His Kingdom. As Pastor Jon looks back over the past year, he highlights several victories, and considers the ways that God may be preparing us for even greater things in the year to come.

Easter: Jesus Calls You by Name - April 24, 2011

"Easter: Jesus Calls You by Name"
Text: John 20:1-18
On this Easter Sunday, Pastor Jon talks about the importance of our names... and how God knows us and calls us by name. It was when Jesus called Mary's name in the garden that she recognized him. How will you respond when he calls you by name?

Palm Sunday: Ride on to Die - April 17, 2011

"Palm Sunday: Ride on to Die"
Text: Matthew 21:1-11 and Psalm 24
After setting the stage for the Triumphal Entry, Pastor Jon stops to explore what Matthew might have meant when he said, "the city asked 'who is this?'" One possibility is that Matthew was offering a liturgical comment, identifying that the priests may have been reciting Psalm 24 as Jesus entered the city. What does it mean for us to hear, "Lift up your heads, o ye gates, that the King of Glory may come in"?

Life Transformations 4: The Resurrection and the Life - April 10, 2011

"Life Transformations 4: The Resurrection and the Life"
Text: John 11:1-45
As we conclude our mini-series on Life Transformations, Pastor Jon looks at the graveclothes of Lazarus as a metaphor for the things in this world that keep us captive--whether destructive forces and addictions... or the good things that keep us from the best things that God has for us. Just as Lazarus finds freedom through the voice of Jesus and the community around him, we find freedom through the sanctifying work of the Spirit and our local communities of faith.

Life Transformations 3: Invisible People - April 3, 2011

"Life Transformations 3: Invisible People"
Text: John 9
In this passage, Jesus sees a man who has been mostly invisible his entire life. Failed by the people who ought to know him best, this man responds to God's transforming grace--finding not only physical sight, but the salvation that is found in Christ. His firm and bold witness inspires us to tell our story in simple yet concrete ways.

Life Transformations 2: Living Water - March 27, 2011

"Life Transformations 2: Living Water"
Text: John 4:1-42
Jesus breaks all societal norms when his afternoon is seemingly interrupted by an encounter with a woman at the well. What divine appointments might God bring your way this week? How can offer living water to the people on the fringes?

Tuesday, March 22, 2011

Life Transformations 1: Born Again - March 20, 2011

"Life Transformations 1: Born Again"
Text: John 3:1-21
In this first of four sermons on transformation, Pastor Jon offers some comparisons between Nicodemus and the "rich young ruler." As we continue our journey through the season of Lent, we're called to consider if we are holding onto our carefully constructed life. Many things can take the rightful place of God in our lives... status, reputation, money, etc. Jesus' call to be "born again," may also be a call to give up some of those elements of a carefully constructed life in order to follow Jesus with our everything.

Sermon on the Mount 8: Rock of Ages - March 13, 2011

"Rock of Ages"
Text: Matthew 7:15-29
In this concluding study on the Sermon on the Mount, Pastor Jon quickly recaps our Ash Wednesday service (recording not available), and then looks at Jesus' conclusion to the Sermon. Jesus Himself places great importance on these teachings, suggesting that if we hear the Sermon but don't allow it to shape us, then we are like a foolish man who builds his house on the sand. Pastor Jon suggests that, "We don’t get to wait until the storm hits to decide what type of house we have built… that decision is made moment-by-moment and day-by-day."

Sermon on the Mount 7: The Narrow Road - March 6, 2011

"The Narrow Road"
Text: Matthew 7:1-14
This portion of the Sermon on the Mount reminds us that it's easy to choose the path that leads to destruction. With many narratives competing for our attention, it's vital that we learn to detect the counterfeit narratives. That's why we practice retelling the Grand Narrative, affirming our faith in Christ, and gathering around the Table.

Sermon on the Mount 6: Seeking First the Kingdom - February 20, 2011

"Seeking First the Kingdom"
Text: Matthew 6:25-34
We continue our journey through the Sermon on the Mount with another look at "Kingdom Economics." Pastor Jon provides some images to help us consider the ways that the Kingdom of God is vastly different from the kingdoms of this world... and how the narrative of our US culture is not the narrative that Kingdom-subjects are called to live.

Thursday, February 17, 2011

Sermon on the Mount 5: Who is Your Master? - February 13, 2011

"Who is Your Master?"
Text: Matthew 6:19-24
The last few sections of the Sermon on the Mount have been about "Kingdom Politics," and now we turn our attention to "Kingdom Economics." After considering what it means to have a good eye, to only serve one master, and to store up treasures that will not rot, Pastor Jon asks us to consider the ways we've been living into the kingdom of our culture, instead of the Kingdom of God.

Wednesday, February 09, 2011

Sermon on the Mount 4: Who is Your Enemy? - February 6, 2011

"Who is Your Enemy?"
Text: Matthew 5:38-48
"Turn the other cheek, go the extra mile, give the shirt off your back." As they've been adapted by our culture, these phrases have lost much of their first-century cultural context. Pastor Jon explores the subversive nature of Jesus' style of resisting the kingdoms of darkness, suggesting that we need to reevaluate our understanding of who the Enemy really is.

Sermon on the Mount 3: Surpassing Righteousness - January 30, 2011

"Surpassing Righteousness"
Text: Matthew 5:21-37
In this section, we find some of the most difficult words of Jesus contained in the Sermon on the Mount. After offering three different methods of interpreting the text, Pastor Jon calls us to give thanks to God for His grace, which enables us to have a righteousness that surpasses that of the pharisees--His righteousness.

Thursday, January 27, 2011

Sermon on the Mount 2: How's Your Flavor? - January 23, 2011

"How's Your Flavor?"
Text: Matthew 5:13-20
After describing the different Jewish sects of Jesus' day, Pastor Jon takes a look at this section of the Sermon on the Mount through the eyes of the Zealots, Pharisees, Sadducees, and Essenes. As we listen to these words of Jesus, we hear Him calling us to engage our world as salt and light.

Thursday, January 20, 2011

Sermon on the Mount 1: A Living Blessing - January 16, 2010

"A Living Blessing"
Text: Matthew 5:1-12
Jesus begins His portrait of the Kingdom of God with a series of blessings, reminding us that God is on the side of the meek, the poor in spirit, and the peacemakers. As subjects of this Kingdom, we're called to be the conduits of these blessings to the world around us. The Beatitudes don't simply end with us, but are a call for us to be the living blessing to those who need to see the Kingdom of God revealed in their lives.

Wednesday, January 12, 2011

Sermon on the Mount Prequel: A Subject in the Kingdom of God - January 9, 2011

"A Subject in the Kingdom of God"
Text: Matthew 4:12-25
As we enter into the New Year, Pastor Jon urges us to consider the ways that the Kingdom of God is revealed among us. Matthew 4 provides the context for Jesus' best known sermon, "The Sermon on the Mount." During this season after Epiphany, we'll take a look at this sermon, and how it calls us to live as Subjects of the Kingdom of God.

Where are We Going? - December 5, 2010

"Where are We Going?"
Text: Romans 15:1-13, Isaiah 11:1-10

Pastor Jon takes a second look at Advent as a road trip. Last week we considered the question, "How much longer?" This week we ask, "Where are we going?" Isaiah paints a picture of the destination in his description of the Peaceable Kingdom. Paul offers some suggestions for how we ought to prepare, and the gifts for the journey that God gives us: endurance, encouragement (hope), and peace (reconciliation).

Are We Almost There Yet? - November 28, 2010

"Are We Almost There Yet?"
Text: Romans 13:8-14, Romans 12:1-2, Matthew 24:36-44

On this first Sunday of Advent, we are challenged to consider the time--that the return of Christ is imminent. Indeed, it is closer now then when we first believed. The question that is before us is not when Christ will return, but how we ought to live in the in-between-time. The Season of Advent reminds us that our moments today are part of the flow of God's interaction with all of history--past, present, and future.

The Twelve Prophets #15: Zechariah and the City without Walls - November 7, 2010

"The Twelve Prophets #15: Zechariah and the City without Walls"
Text: Zechariah 2:1-13

Zechariah uses construction and building imagery to help the returning exiles understand their God-given purpose and ultimate destination. In chapter 2, he paints a picture of an ever-expanding city without walls. Pastor Jon suggests that in this city, it's not up to us to determine who's in and who's out, but rather it is up to our God who is a consuming fire. The message concludes with a call to focus on the "unshakable essentials" of our faith.

The Twelve Prophets #14: Haggai and a Dream Deferred - October 31, 2010

"The Twelve Prophets #14: Haggai and a Dream Deferred"
Text: Haggai 1:1-2:9

As the exiles beginning to return from captivity, the initial enthusiasm for rebuilding the temple eventually wanes. Haggai attempts to remind the Jews of God's dreams for them, inspiring them to return to work on the temple. Pastor Jon examines this passage, asking us to consider the God-given dreams that we've neglected and allowed to get dusty on the top shelf of our lives.

The Twelve Prophets #13: Habakkuk and Theodicy - October 10, 2010

"The Twelve Prophets #13: Habakkuk and Theodicy"
Text: Habakkuk 1:1-2:4

(Note: Unfortunately, Sermon #12 on Nahum was not recorded, and so is not included in our podcast)

Pastor Jon continues our journey through the Minor Prophets, this week looking at Habakkuk.  While we do not always understand the apparent evil in the world around us, Habakkuk reminds us that God has a plan and a purpose.  While He welcomes our honest questions, we can also be reminded that He walks with us through the unknown and the darkness of the world.

The Twelve Prophets #11: Zephaniah and the Remnant - September 26, 2010

"The Twelve Prophets #11: Zephaniah and the Remnant"
Text: Zephaniah 3:12-20
In looking at the prophet Zephaniah, we must also explore the historical events of the day.  Pastor Jon looks into the lives of Kings Manasseh, Amon, and Josiah, and the discovery of the scroll in the temple.  Zephaniah offers strong condemnations and judgments, but a glimmer of hope is provided in the knowledge that there will be a remnant returning to Jerusalem.  In exploring how they got into this problem in the first place, we're reminded of the importance of sacred space and time, and refusing to allow our worship to be cluttered with distractions.

The Twelve Prophets #10: Micah and Court - September 12, 2010

"The Twelve Prophets #10: Micah and Court"
Text: Micah 6:1-8
One of the most familiar passages of Micah (Micah 6:8) is part of an oracle that represents a trial--a court case between God and His people.  Pastor Jon explores the format and content of the verses, and then offers some thoughts regarding justice, lovingkindness, and humility.

The Twelve Prophets #9: Micah and Peace - September 5, 2010

"The Twelve Prophets #9: Micah and Peace"
Text: Micah 4:1-5
We continue our study in the Minor Prophets, turning our attention toward the Southern Kingdom of Judah, with a look at the prophet Micah.  Micah looks forward to the Peaceable Kingdom, when weapons will be refashioned as instruments of peace and agriculture.  Pastor Jon reminds us that we are to be faithful and committed to God, regardless of how the "other nations" believe and worship.

The Twelve Prophets #8: Hosea and Taking God for Granted - August 29, 2010

"The Twelve Prophets #8: Hosea and Taking God for Granted"
Text: Hosea 5:15-6:6
In our continued journey through the Minor Prophets, Pastor Jon suggests that the Israelites of Hosea 6 had adopted the dangerous practice of taking God (and His grace and forgiveness) for granted.  The prevalent belief appears to be that they could live however they wanted... knowing that God would be faithful and forgive them.  Instead, God compares them to the morning mist and the early dew, which quickly disappears.

The Twelve Prophets #7: Hosea and Faithfulness - August 22, 2010

"The Twelve Prophets #7: Hosea and Faithfulness"
Text: Hosea 1-3
Continuing on our journey through the Twelve (Minor) Prophets, Pastor Jon looks at Hosea and his relationship with Gomer as a picture of God's chesed (lovingkindness or extreme faithfulness).  Though she did nothing to deserve it, Hosea chose her... and though she did everything to deserve condemnation, he redeemed her and renewed the covenant with her.  This "Second Greatest Love Story Ever Told" gives us a clear picture of the "Greatest Story Ever Told."

The Twelve Prophets #6: Amos and Complacency - August 15, 2010

"The Twelve Prophets #6: Amos and Complacency"
Text: Amos 6:1-7
This sermon takes a second look at the book of Amos, this time exploring the spiritual complacency that came from the wealth and luxury experienced by the Northern Kingdom of Israel.  This spiritual complacency occurs when we center our lives around the things of this world, and relegate the Kingdom of God to the outside.

The Twelve Prophets #5: Amos and Justice - August 8, 2010

"The Twelve Prophets #5: Amos and Justice"
Text: Amos 5:18-27
It was the best of times... Under Jeroboam the Second, the Northern Kingdom of Israel had experienced unprecedented growth, security, and wealth.  As we learn from studying the prophet Amos, this caused the people to become spiritually complacent, perpetuating injustices against the poor and innocent.  Amos says, "Woe to you who long for the day of the Lord," indicating that the people of Israel were on the wrong side of God's justice.

Thursday, August 19, 2010

The Twelve Prophets #4: Joel and the Locusts - August 1, 2010

"The Twelve Prophets #4: Joel and the Locusts"
Text: Joel 2:1-32
Joel uses a locust swarm to warn the people of a great judgment that will come if they do not repent.  And this must be a true repentance of the heart, not simply being sorry because they got caught.  Pastor Jon continues our 16-week journey through The Twelve Prophets, commonly called The Minor Prophets.

The Twelve Prophets #3: Obadiah - July 25, 2010

"The Twelve Prophets #3: Obadiah"
Text: Obadiah
Obadiah, the shortest book in the Old Testament, contains a prophetic oracle against the nation of Edom.  Pastor Jon offers some thoughts on how Christians today ought to be careful of falling into the same sins committed by the people of Edom.

Wednesday, August 18, 2010

The Twelve Prophets #2: Jonah and the Great City - July 18, 2010

"The Twelve Prophets #2: Jonah and the Great City"
Text: Jonah 3 & 4
Pastor Jon continues our survey through Jonah by looking at the way the narrator repeats the word 'great.'  Jonah is called to do the work of God in the Great City of Ninevah, and yet is angry when his ministry is successful.  As he gets angry about the growing vine, we are reminded that our problems and concerns often seem great to us, but may not be as great as what God intends to accomplish.

The Twelve Prophets #1: Jonah Gets Down - July 11, 2010

"The Twelve Prophets #1: Jonah Gets Down"
Text: Jonah 1 & 2
Today we embark on a 16 week journey through The Twelve Prophets (commonly referred to as The Minor Prophets).  Pastor Jon looks at the first part of the book of Jonah as an image of our tendency to run from God, instead of going to the places that He calls us to.  And yet, even when we get to the bottom of the deepest pit, we are reminded that God's arm is long enough and His love is strong enough to bring us back up.

Galatians #6: Parting Words - July 4, 2010

"Galatians #6: Parting Words"
Text: Galatians 6
This completes our six week series in the book of Galatians.  Pastor Jon takes a look at some of Paul's practical comments, and then considers what it means for Paul to say, "I bear on my body the marks of Jesus."  What might it mean for us to say that today?

Galatians #5: The Fruit of the Spirit - June 27, 2010

"Galatians #5: The Fruit of the Spirit"
Text: Galatians 5:13-25
Pastor Jon takes a look at this familiar passage from Galatians, exploring what it means to live according to the Spirit instead of according to the law.  Paul teaches that the Spirit at work within us will bear fruit in keeping with the Spirit.  We are free from the law because we are free to do good.  The Spirit changes our "want to" so that we naturally bear fruit.

Galatians #4: One of These Things - June 20, 2010

"Galatians #4: One of These Things"
Text: Galatians 3:26-4:7
Paul challenges our natural inclination to sort and categorize people based on race, economic status, or gender.  Indeed, the ground is level at the foot of the cross, and all people are welcome into the family of God as dearly loved children, co-heirs of the Kingdom of God.

Galatians #3: Hypocrisy and Integrity - June 13, 2010

"Galatians #3: Hypocrisy and Integrity"
Text: Galatians 2:11-21
This is the third of six sermons on the book of Galatians. Pastor Jon suggests that one of the biggest criticisms facing the church is that of hypocrisy--a charge that goes back to the earliest days of the church. The antidote is integrity, living the same way everywhere we go, even when nobody is looking. In this portion of our text, Paul tells how he confronted Peter because of his hypocrisy in regards to keeping the Old Testament Law.

Galatians #2: Anchored in Jesus - June 6, 2010

"Galatians #2: Anchored in Jesus"
Text: Galatians 1:10-24
How do you face criticism and false accusations? Paul faced his accusers confidently, offering them evidence of his good fruits, references from other believers, and the story of his calling. Ultimately, he could face down the false accusations because he knew who he was in Jesus.

Galatians #1: Christianity Plus - May 30, 2010

"Galatians #1: Christianity Plus"
Text: Galatians 1:1-12
Pastor Jon begins a 6 week series on the book of Galatians with an overview of the letter to the Gentile believers in Galatia. Paul challenges those who are teaching adherence to the law, and encourages the believers to place their faith in Christ alone. C. S. Lewis might refer to this as "Mere Christianity," and what the Judaizers were teaching as "Christianity Plus."

Are You Really Listening? - November 8, 2009

"Are You Really Listening?"

Pastor Jon combines several texts of scripture to illustrate the words of James 1:22 (Do not merely listen to the word and so deceive yourself, do what it says.) From the Israelites in the wilderness to the disciples' treatment of children, we explore the human propensity to look like we're listening--without really being transformed by what we have heard.

To the Other Side of the Tracks - October 25, 2009

"To the Other Side of the Tracks"

Text: Mark 6-8

Pastor Jon retells Mark 6-8 in broad sweeping strokes, paying particular attention to the geographical movement that Jesus makes. Based on some material by Ray Vanderlaan, this sermon explores the message that Jesus lived out--that the Highway of Holiness was to take the Gospel to the margins and fringes, that because of Jesus, the outsiders were to become insiders, and welcome to the table.

Made Clean from the Inside Out - October 11, 2009

"Made Clean from the Inside Out"

Text: Mark 7:1-23

Pastor Jon looks at some of the traditions of the Pharisees to help us better understand Jesus' call in Mark 7. As we seek being cleaned from the inside out, we also recognize that it's not about changing people on the outside--but introducing them to the God who can change them on the inside.

Recognizing Jesus - October 4, 2009

"Recognizing Jesus"

Text: Mark 6:30-56

Our text from Mark 6 shows sequences of events where people either recognized, or failed to recognize, Jesus. We are reminded that Jesus is Jesus--both when things are going well and there's plenty of food, and when the storms are raging. Our inability to recognize Jesus doesn't change His ability to see us and recognize us. Pastor Jon concludes with a challenge that we are to be the representation of Christ to the world around us... that we might be so wrapped up in Him, that people confuse our identity with His.

Buffet Christianity - September 27, 2009

"Buffet Christianity"

Texts: Mark 6, Amos 7

Pastor Jon takes a look at the question of "Who is Jesus?" By looking at the stories of King Herod & John the Baptist, and Amaziah & Amos, we see the great dangers of elevating ourselves above the Word of God or the Prophet of God. These stories bring us to this conclusion: If God is not Lord of our life all the time, then He's really not Lord of our life at all.

Laodicea: Learning to Rely on God - September 20, 2009

"Laodicea: Learning to Rely on God"

Text: Revelation 3:14-22

On this special "Homecoming" Sunday, Pastor Jon takes another look at the familiar passage from Revelation chapter 3. Instead of looking at each sentence as a mini-sermon, as we are prone to do, we looked at the letter as a whole unit, inside the context of Laodicean culture, geography, and history.
