Of Baskets and Mangers

Texts: Psalm 124; Romans 12:1-8; Matthew 16:13-20; Exodus 1:8-2:10

Pastor Jon discusses ways that we can be agents of the Kingdom of life and hope, by committing faithful acts of subversion against the kingdom of power, death, and oppression. Oskar Schindler, Shiphrah & Puah, and Pharaoh's daughter are presented as examples of how we might be beacons of hope and light in the midst of darkness.

Texts: Psalm 133; Romans 11:1-2a, 29-32; Matthew 15:10-28; Genesis 45:1-15

Where is God

Texts: Psalm 105:1-4; Matthew 14:22-33; Romans 10:5-15; Genesis 37:12-36; Romans 8:28

Pastor Jon explores the story of Joseph and his brothers, noting that nowhere in Genesis 37:12-36 are we able to find mention of God. And yet, as the Joseph narrative comes to a conclusion, Joseph is able to affirm that God's hand was at work in everything, in order that many lives might be saved.

Forgiveness: Seeing the Face of God

Texts: Psalm 17:6-8; Romans 9:1-5; Matthew 14:13-21; Genesis 32-33

Pastor Jon looks at the narrative of Jacob's return to Esau, as found in Genesis 32-33. As we read the text, we try to imagine that we are reading it for the first time, hoping to learn the lessons that Jacob may have learned as he discovered the meaning of forgiveness in the face of his very own brother.

Desperate for God - July 20, 2008

God's Ladder

Texts: Psalm 105:1-8; Matthew 13:31-33, 44-52; Romans 8:26-39; Genesis 29:14b-30, Revelation 2:4-5

Jacob's great love for Rachel is evidenced by his glad service to his Uncle Laban. The many years of labor seemed like only a few days. Pastor Jon looks at our relationship with God, and suggests ways to recover "our first love."

God's Ladder - July 13, 2008

God's Ladder

Texts: Psalm 139:1-12; Matthew 13:24-30, 36-43; Romans 8:12-25; Genesis 28:10-22

Often called the story of "Jacob's Ladder," Pastor Jon asks us to consider who it was that built the ladder between heaven and earth. When we remember that we are completely unable to reach out to heaven on our own, we recognize how essential it was that God was willing to reach out to us, to call our name, and to come to us.

Trading Your Birthright - July 6, 2008

Trading Your Birthright

Texts: Psalm 119:105-112; Matthew 13:1-9, 18-23; Romans 8:1-11, 25-30; Genesis 25:19-34; John 6:22-27; Romans 3:23, 6:23, 5:6-8, 8:15-17

The Jacob & Esau narrative reminds us of Adam & Eve, and how they traded the greatest birthright of all, being made in the Image of God. As Sons of Adam and Daughters of Eve, we too have all traded our birthrights, and yet God seeks to redeem us and welcome us to His Table.

The Principle of Firstfruits - June 22, 2008

The Principle of Firstfruits

Texts: Psalm 89:1-4; Matthew 10:40-42; Romans 6:12-23; Genesis 22:1-14; Joshua 6:26; I Kings 16:34; I Kings 17:13-16

Pastor Jon offers a personal look at the reasons why he gives to God, in hopes that we might find more meaning in our giving. As we give to God, we should consider the biblical principal of Firstfruits--as demonstrated by the city of Jericho, the widow at Zarephath, and the offering of Isaac by Abraham. These stories remind us that God is the owner of everything, and that He is faithful to provide for His children.

Father to the Fatherless - June 15, 2008

Father to the Fatherless

Texts: Psalm 86:8-10; Genesis 21:8-21; Romans 6:1-11; Matthew 10:24-39; Psalm 68:4-6

On this Fathers Day, Pastor Jon looks at the way in which God is a Father to Ishmael after he was disowned by his own biological father, Abraham. If the church is the hands and feet of Christ, then we too ought to reflect the Father-heart of God as we care for those around us who may feel fatherless. May we also be reminded that God is our Father, and that He cares for us more than lilies and sparrows!

Tuesday, June 10, 2008

Faith & Action - June 8, 2008

Faith & Action

Texts: Psalm 116:1-6; Matthew 9:35-10:8; Romans 5:1-8; Genesis 18:1-15, 21:1-7; James 1:22-25, 2:14-18

In this portion of the Abraham narrative, we see Abraham and Sarah receiving a promise that requires their participation and activity. While we must trust God and believe in His promises, that trust ought to also inform and shape our actions. We are to live in a manner consistent with the promises that God has given to us.

Texts: Psalm 33:1-12; Genesis 12:1-9; Romans 4:13-25; Matthew 9:3-13, 18-26

Join us this summer as we journey through the book of Genesis, focusing on the patriarchs who heard God's voice and responded. This week, we look at Abram (Abraham), and how he responded to God's call to go to an unknown land. May we follow God wherever He leads us, and may also live the way that God would want us to live.

Trinity Sunday: Reflecting God - May 18, 2008

Trinity Sunday: Reflecting God

Texts: Psalm 8; Genesis 1; John 1; Matthew 28:16-20

On Trinity Sunday, Pastor Jon looks at the practical implications of the doctrine of the Trinity for us as individuals and as a congregation. What does a church look like when it reflects the very nature of the Triune-God? It is a holy community of love, pouring itself out for each other--and also for the world around it.

Pastor Jon looks at Pentecost through the lens of the life of Moses, and his desire the the Spirit of the LORD would come upon all people, and that they would prophesy. This desire is fulfilled on the day of Pentecost, when the believers became "God's Burning Bushes" speaking forth His words to those who came to watch.

The Name "Christian" probably had its origins as a derogatory way for pagans to refer to the followers of "The Way." Peter encourages his readers to not be ashamed of the Name, but to bear it well. This sermon explores what it means for 2008 Followers of Jesus to bear the Name "Christian."

Are They Asking?

Texts: Psalm 66:16-20; John 14:15-21; Acts 17:22-31; I Peter 2:9-12, 3:13-22; Romans 12:1-2

Peter tells us to "always be prepared to give an answer for the reason for the hope that is within us." We ought to be able to clearly explain our faith and how it has made a difference in our lives in a brief and compelling way. But we must also explore the question, "Are they asking?" And if not, "why not?" May we live such good lives that people are compelled to ask us the reason for the hope that we have.

In looking at selections from First Peter, he invites church members to join together in a model of shared ministry where each one uses whatever gifts they have received to God's glory.

The Power of the Presence of Christ

Texts: Psalm 116:1-6; John 24:13-35; Acts 2:14a, 36-41; I Peter 1:17-25

The Presence of Christ was powerful in the lives of the disciples on the road to Emmaus. That same power is available to us today because of the Risen Christ. The Church is to be the Body of Christ, the physical presence of Christ in a world in need of a Savior. Let us experience His presence, so that we might take that presence to the world around us.

Good Friday: Who Do You Say that I Am? - March 21, 2008

Good Friday: Who Do You Say that I Am?

In a joint Good Friday Service, members of the Cape Elizabeth United Methodist Church and the Cape Elizabeth Church of the Nazarene imagine what it might have been like for the disciples and followers of Jesus to gather together after Jesus' burial. As they attempt to make sense of the last few hours, days, months, and even years, we hear them share their own preconceptions and memories of who Jesus is. Let us also consider that all-important question, "Who do YOU say that I am?"

Follow Me... For I Am the King - March 16, 2008

Follow Me...For I Am the King

Texts: Psalm 118:25-27; Isaiah 50:4-9a; Philippians 2:5-11; Matthew 21:1-11

Palm Sunday presents us an opportunity to consider how the disciples might have felt during Holy Week. We are reminded that the call to follow Jesus is a call to follow Him not just when it's convenient or makes us feel good...but to follow Him wherever He leads--even as He goes to the cross.

Follow Me... And Come Forth From the Tomb - March 9, 2008

Follow Me...And Come Forth From the Tomb

Texts: Psalm 150; Psalm 137; Ezekiel 37:1-14; Romans 8:6-11; John 11:1-45

The texts this week lead us to consider the "very dry" bones in Ezekiel, and the "very dead" Lazarus in John. When we realize that these are not simply hopeless situations, but have moved "beyond all hope," we are reminded that for God, there is no such thing as "beyond all hope." God can bring hope into our hopelessness, life into death, and joy into our sadness. As we "come forth from the tomb," may we be living testimonies of God's grace in a world full of dry bones.

Follow Me... And You Will See - March 2, 2008

Follow Me...And You Will See

Texts: Psalm 23; 1 Samuel 16:1-13; Ephesians 5:8-14; John 9:1-41

The texts this week help us to understand that Jesus is the Light of the World, and that he desires for us to truly see as He sees. In contrast to the man born blind from birth, we find that those with spiritual blindspots are far more handicapped. Samuel struggles to look past outward appearances to annoint the next king of Israel. In our Gospel lesson the Pharisees, the neighbors, the parents, and the disciples all display their spiritual blindness.

Follow Me... And the Truth Well Set You Free - February 17, 2008

Follow Me...And the Truth Will Set You Free

Texts: Psalm 103; Exodus 17:1-7; Romans 5:1-11; I Samuel 11 & 12; John 4

Pastor Jon looks at two biblical characters who found themselves trapped or in bondage of some sort. In each case, a prophetic voice speaks truth into their situation that sets them free. Jesus calls us to admit the truth about our situations, to confess to Him our need of a Savior. The good news is that He knows how we were formed, and He loves us just the same.

Follow Me...Into the Wilderness

Texts: Psalm 32:6-7; Genesis 2:15-17, 3:1-7; Romans 5:12-19; Matthew 4:1-11

Pastor Jon invites us to follow Jesus into the wilderness during this lenten season. The wilderness is a place that is dry and barren, a place with few comforts of life, a place where we are confronted with silence and solitude. And yet, when we go into the wilderness, we learn to rely upon God and to trust Him for all of our needs.

Got Life? Got Music? (pt. 4 of 4) - February 3, 2008

Got Life? Got Music? (pt. 4 of 4)

Texts: Psalm 37:3-6; Matthew 4:18-23; Romans 12:1-8; I Samuel 17:38-40; I Corinthians 12:28-31; I Peter 4:7-11; Ephesians 4:4-6, 11-13, 16

Pastor Jon concludes our study on Abundant Life by looking at the gifts, talents, and abilities that God has placed within each of us, and the unique role that we have within His Kingdom. Like David, we must never try to be someone that we are not, but simply use our gifts, and trust the God who gave them to us.

Part of living an "Abundant Life" is being freed from the bondage of greed and materialism. Pastor Jon looks at several passages of scripture, and challenges us to move beyond a legalistic approach to tithing, toward a New Testament, grace-filled vision of being generous with God's resources.

REPEAT: Crash Helmets & Life Jackets - January 25, 2009

Pentecost - Crash Helmets & Life Jackets

For the next 4 weeks, we bring you some of our favorite messages from 2006. Regular weekly sermon podcasts will resume on February 22, 2009.

Originally Published: June 4, 2006

Text: Acts 2:1-41

Pentecost Sunday provides an opportunity to consider the great power of the Holy Spirit available to the Church. Unfortunately, we are often ill-equipped to tap into God's power, and would be surprised if we encountered the sort of transformational worship that took place on that first Christian Pentecost. Theologian Annie Dillard suggests that our ushers should distribute crash helmets and life jackets in case the Almighty chose to show up at church.

Got Life? There Is No Off Season (pt. 2 of 4)

Texts: Psalm 46; Ecclesiastes 3:1-14; I Peter 4:1-11; Mark 11:12-21

We continue our journey through the "Got Life? Live It!" series by taking a look at the relationship between Abundant Life and our time. Pastor Jon looks at the relationship between the fig tree and the temple (Mark 11) to show us how "There Is No Off Season." As you listen to this sermon, may you be challenged by the truth that all time is sacred time--all time is God's time.

Got Life? Live It! (pt. 1 of 4) - January 13, 2008

Got Life? Live It! (pt. 1 of r)

Texts: Psalm 16:7-11; Deuteronomy 30:11-20; John 10:1-11

Pastor Jon begins a four-week series exploring what it means to us when Jesus said "I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.” Today, he takes a look at several deficient metaphors which might be used to explain God, or our relationship with God. We then take a look at the law, as given to the Israelites, and how it was given in order to bring life to the people. As the fulfillment of the law, Jesus comes in order that all people might have abundant life!

The Sign of Immanuel - December 23, 2007

The Sign of Immanuel

Texts: Isaiah 7:1-16, Matthew 1:18-25, Psalm 95

Recognizing that the prophecy in Isaiah 7 is fulfilled (in part) in 730BC and fulfilled (in completeness) in the birth of Jesus, Pastor Jon looks at the lessons we might learn from King Ahaz's response to the foreign policy crisis he found himself facing. When we face crisis, may we first turn toward God, may we stand firm in our faith, and may we be prepared to hear a word from God at all times.

Hope for the Hopeless - December 9, 2007

Hope for the Hopeless

Text: Isaiah 11:1-10

View the photo of "Isaiah's Christmas Tree" here.

Pastor Jon uses the image of hope found in Isaiah 11 as an example of how God's promises are forever, and that even when the promise seems to be challenged, God has a plan. In looking at scripture, we find many examples when God's promise was challenged, but we see His hand at work anyway. May you also find that God is a source of hope in the midst of whatever hopeless situation you encounter this Advent. May you also bring hope into the world around you as you point people to salvation in Jesus the Christ.

Walk in the Light - December 2, 2007

Walk in the Light

Text: Isaiah 2:1-5; Romans 13:11-14

On this First Sunday of Advent, Pastor Jon looks at the vision Isaiah had concerning the future coming of the Kingdom of God. As we consider how we ought to live "between the two advents" we are reminded of Isaiah's exhortation to "walk in the light of the Lord." In a world filled with war, hatred, and darkness, we are to be agents of peace, love, and light. As we walk in the light, may we see His Kingdom come, His will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

Living by Faith - November 18, 2007

Living by Faith

Text: Luke 21:5-19; 2 Corinthians 4:16-18

Join us as we take a look at Jesus' response to a casual observation about the beauty of the temple. Pastor Jon encourages us to consider the "temples" in our lives--the tangible and visible elements that we are tempted to place our faith in. Instead of trusting in temporary security blankets, we are to put our faith in the invisible and eternal truths of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

International Day of Prayer for the Persecuted Church - November 11, 2007

International Day of Prayer for the Persecuted Church

Text: Hebrews 11:32-12:4; Psalm 46

Did you know that there are an estimated 200 million Christians who live in places where they can be persecuted for their faith in Jesus? For the International Day of Prayer for the Persecuted Church, the Cape Elizabeth Church of the Nazarene attempted to simulate a portion of a secret worship service. We gathered in darkness and silence, with the shades pulled and the scriptures read in whispers. Listen to this message that Pastor Jon shared with the congregation about the persecuted church, and how we ought to live our lives. Join with us in prayer, as we lift their burdens to the Lord.

Some materials for the message were adapted and quoted from materials provided by Voice of the Martyrs and International Christian Concern.

Zacchaeus

Texts: Luke 19:1-10; Hebrews 12:1-2; Luke 18:15-17, 35-43

In looking at the familiar story of Zacchaeus, Pastor Jon looks at the the lessons we can learn when we consider how we are like Zacchaeus, and the ways in which we might be like the crowds of Jesus' followers.

God, Have Mercy on Me, a Sinner - October 28, 2007

God, Have Mercy on Me, a Sinner

Text: Luke 18:9-14; Luke 6:36-37

Once again, Jesus takes our understanding of the Kingdom of God and turns it upside down. By looking at the Pharisee and the Tax Collector, Jesus helps us to understand the value of our own righteousness as compared to the value of God's mercy and grace. This week, Pastor Jon asks the listener to consider ways in which they might be like the Pharisee, and ways that they might be like the tax collector. May we all be reminded that we are but sinners, in need of God's mercy and grace.

The Parable of the Persistent Widow

Texts: Luke 17:20-35; Luke 18:1-8; Jeremiah 31:33-34; Luke 11:5-13

Pastor Jon takes a fresh look at the "Parable of the Persistent Widow and the Unjust Judge" by looking first at the larger context in which the parable is placed within the Gospel of Luke. Despite the bad news that we may see around us, Jesus encourages us to 'hold fast, don't lose heart, and keep the faith.' Find more sermons at our website: www.capenazarene.org.

Where are the Other Nine? - October 7, 2007

"Where are the Other Nine?"

Text: Luke 17:11-19

The miracle of the 10 lepers helps us to understand the difference between being cured and being made whole. Pastor Jon looks at many of the lessons found in this miracle, encouraging us to leave behind the lesser things in order to follow after Jesus and seek wholeness & wellness. The service concludes with Pastor Jon & Melody and their friends Jeff & Dorothy Turner singing, "I am Resolved."

The Wrong Side of the Tracks - September 30, 2007

"The Wrong Side of the Tracks"

Text: Luke 16:19-31

The parable of "The Rich Man and Lazarus" reminds us of the difference between the "haves" and the "have-nots." Pastor Jon shares a number of lessons from this parable, encouraging us to care for the poor and needy among us, and to share the Good News of the Gospel with all people--regardless of which side of the tracks they live.

People vs. Possessions - September 23, 2007

"People vs. Possessions"

Text: Luke 16:1-15

The Greatest Homecoming - September 16, 2007

"The Greatest Homecoming"

Texts: Luke 15:11-32; Luke 15:1-2; II Corinthians 5:18-20

As part of the Cape Elizabeth Church of the Nazarenes's Fortieth Anniversary Homecoming Celebration, Pastor Jon Twitchell shares some thoughts from one of the richest of Jesus' parables. In looking at the Prodigal Son, we see a call for us to forsake the ways of the Older Brother, in order to be more like the Father--seeking out the lost and welcoming them home with a great homecoming celebration. May all of our Homecoming celebrations be a foretaste of that Great Homecoming!

Freedom to Do Right - August 26, 2007

"Freedom to Do Right"

Text: Luke 13:10-17; Hebrews 12:14, 18-24; Galatians 5:1, 13-25

Pastor Jon looks at the relationship between grace and the law, and the freedom that we have in Christ. This is not a freedom to "do what we want, any old time," but freedom to do God's will and to live according to the Spirit.

Not Peace, but Division - August 19, 2007

"Not Peace, but Division"

Text: Luke 12:49-53; Matthew 10:32-39; Hebrews 11:35-38

Jesus says that He came to earth, not to bring peace, but division. Pastor Jon explores this hard saying of Jesus, and challenges us to put our relationship with Jesus before every other relationship. The message concludes with a look at those who put Jesus before their own life.

Daily Kingdom Living - August 12, 2007

"Daily Kingdom Living"

Text: Luke 12:22-40; I Kings 3:5-14

Pastor Jon continues to look at the parable of the farmer, and how the message of stewardship applies to windfalls. Jesus calls his "little flock" to sell their possessions and give to the poor. By doing so, they reflect the generous heart of God, and demonstrate their faith that He will care for their needs. As followers of Christ, we are called to be ready for His return, by living daily according to Kingdom principles.

Hungry? - August 5, 2007

"Hungry?"

Text: Psalm 107:1-9; Luke 12:13-21; Matthew 5:6; Matthew 6:25-34

What was the matter with the farmer and his abundant crop? Was he greedy? lazy? foolish? Or perhaps, he was simply given a blessing, and failed to thank God for the blessing and ask what he should do with the blessing. This week, Pastor Jon uses the image of hunger to help us understand what it means to be truly hungry for God.

Praying the Lord's Prayer - July 29, 2007

"Praying the Lord's Prayer"

Skit: http://www.dramatix.org/Walk/lords_prayer.html
Texts: Luke 11:1-13; Matthew 6:9-13

Pastor Jon issues a challenge to carefully pray through the Lord's Prayer twice a day for the next week, before presenting our list of "prayer requests" to the Father. By carefully exploring each line of the prayer, we are better able to understand how we are to relate to God, and the way in which prayer can transform us.

Sweet Hour of Prayer - July 22, 2007

"Sweet Hour of Prayer"

Text: Luke 10:38-42

Pastor Jon explores the relationship between "Being" and "Doing" by looking at the narrative of Mary and Martha. Mary sat at the feet of Jesus while Martha worried herself in the kitchen. Scripture doesn't teach that we should never be people of action, but that our activity should flow out of our time with the Lord. We are to be in a posture of receptivity, we are to be motivated by our time with the Lord, we are to set our to do list aside in favor of His to do list, and our attitude should be one of cheerful peacefulness.

Calling Down Fire - July 1, 2007

"Calling Down Fire"

Text: Psalm 16; II Kings 2:1-2, 6-14; Galatians 5:1, 13-25; Luke 9:51-62

Ever been angry? Really angry? Ever dismissed someone entirely because they didn't do what you wanted, or think the way you think? Ever treated someone like they weren't worth the oxygen that they breathe? Listen to what happens in Luke chapter 9 when James and John offer to call down fire on a Samaritan village.

Grow Up - June 17, 2007

"Grow Up"

Text: Psalm 5:1-8; I Kings 21:1-21a; Galatians 2:15-21; Luke 7:36-8:3

What is your motivation for good behavior? Do you behave in order to obtain rewards? Do you avoid evil in order to avoid punishment? Or, like the woman in our Gospel lesson, do you choose to do good as a response to God's amazing grace?

A New Lease on Life - June 10, 2007

"A New Lease on Life"

Texts: Psalm 146:5-10; I Kings 17:8-24; Galatians 1:11-24 ; Luke 7:11-17

Pastor Jon poses a series of questions designed to help us consider how we live our lives. Like the widow's son in Zarephath, and the widow's son in Nain, and like Saul (the persecutor of the Church), we have been offered a new lease on life. What decisions will you make? How will you live your life?

Singleminded Faith - June 3, 2007

"Singleminded Faith"

Text: I Kings 18:20-39; James 1:2-8, 22-27; Luke 7:1-10; Romans 7:19

Even when we know what we ought to do...even when we want to do what we ought to do, we often find ourselves doing exactly the opposite. We want to surrender control to God, but we find ourselves often trying to take it back. We leave our burdens at the altar of prayer, only to pick them back up again when we rise. However, when we seek to be in tune with God's Spirit, and allow Him to purify our hearts, we find that are better able to "will one thing," and be singleminded in our devotion to God.

Surrendering Control - May 27, 2007

"Surrendering Control"

Texts: Acts 2:1-21

Learn what rollercoasters, helium balloons, and Pentecost all have in common! Pastor Jon brings a very special Pentecost message, encouraging us to give up control, so that the Holy Spirit can have control.

Just Walk Across the Room #4: Grander Vision Living - May 20, 2007

"Just Walk Across the Room #4: Grander Vision Living"

Texts: John 20:30-31; John 21:1-19

The Cape Elizabeth Church of the Nazarene concludes their four-week Evangelism Training campaign based upon Bill Hybels' book Just Walk Across the Room. By looking at the end of the Gospel of John, Pastor Jon helps us consider ways that we "go back to life as usual" instead of living according to God's Grander Vision. May we begin each and every day considering how we might partner with God to help find lost people, restore that which is broken, and reclaim that which is His.

Just Walk Across the Room #3: The Power of Stories - May 13, 2007

"Just Walk Across the Room #3: The Power of Stories"

The Cape Elizabeth Church of the Nazarene continues their four-week Evangelism Training campaign based upon Bill Hybels' book Just Walk Across the Room. Pastor Jon talks about the power of story as a universal tool which transcends all cultural, generational and economic lines. Humans are hard-wired to resonate to stories, especially those stories which reflect the Great Story. The task of evangelism is about helping your friend consider how his story might intersect with God's Great Story. One way to do this is to share our own story in clear and concise ways.

"Just Walk Across the Room #2: Living in 3D"

Text: Luke 15

The Cape Elizabeth Church of the Nazarene continues their four-week Evangelism Training campaign based upon Bill Hybels' book Just Walk Across the Room. Pastor Jon shares some of the reasons why we tend to shy away from evangelism, and then offers some bite-sized chunks of evangelism--steps that we can all take. Living in 3D is about Developing Friendships, Discovering Stories, and Discerning Next Steps.

Learn how you can give the Single Greatest Gift, by simply looking for those in need of a touch of grace.

Follow Me - April 22, 2007

"Follow Me"

Texts: Acts 9:1-6, (7-20); John 21:1-19

A pulpit exchange brings United Methodist Pastor David Nicol to the Cape Elizabeth Church of the Nazarene. Pastor David reminds us that the call to follow Jesus is a call to jump in with both feet, ready to follow Him whereever He leads. While that may even lead us to a cross, we know that Jesus will go with us, all the way. Pastor David is the pastor of the Elm Street (South Portland, ME) and Buxton (ME) United Methodist congregations.

"Annual Meeting: For Future Generations"

Text: Psalm 22:25-31

Pastor Jon Twitchell delivers his Annual Pastor's Report to the Cape Elizabeth (Maine, USA) Church of the Nazarene. We invite you to listen to this report, and to pray for us as we look for ways to be a light "For Future Generations."

Easter: What will you do with Jesus? - April 8, 2007

"Easter: What will you do with Jesus?"

Text: John 19:38-20:31

He is risen! He is risen, indeed!

While the twelve disciples all betray, deny, or abandon Jesus, two secret disciples come out of hiding to make public their allegiance to Jesus and His teachings. We can only imagine the guilt, despair, and hopelessness experienced by the disciples during those nights following Jesus' arrest and crucifixion. And yet, despite the fact that they fled Jesus, He came to them with grace and forgiveness. The question remains--what will you do about the Good News of Jesus the Christ? What sort of a disciple will you be?

Palm Sunday: The Wisdom of God - April 1, 2007

"Palm Sunday: The Wisdom of God"

Text: Matthew 21:1-11; I Corinthians 1:18-29; Psalm 20:7; Psalm 118; Matthew 16:26

As we continue our Lenten journey in the Psalms, we turn our attention to Psalm 118, against the backdrop of the Triumphal Entry. We are reminded that God chooses the foolish things of this world to confound the wise, and demonstrates His strength through weakness. Instead of putting our trust in all that this world has to offer, may we always "trust in the Name of the Lord our God."

Out of the Depths - March 25, 2007

"Out of the Depths"

Text: Psalm 130, Hosea 3, Psalm 40:1-3

Last week we looked at the Shepherd Psalm (Psalm 23) as a way of understanding that God goes with us in the deepest, darkest moments human experience. This week's study on Psalm 130 and Psalm 40 helps us understand that God doesn't simply walk with us through those moments, but that He also can lift us out of the pit and set our feet upon the rock!

Sunday, March 18, 2007

The Good Shepherd - March 18, 2007

"The Good Shepherd"

Texts: Psalm 23, John 9, John 10, Ephesians 5:8-14

Our fourth Psalm on our Lenten journey, Psalm 23 provides us with hope in the midst of our suffering, for we know the degree to which God walks through the Valley of the Shadow of Death. Pastor Jon also provides a dramatic reading of Peter Kreeft's "Shared Hells," (from Bread and Wine, Plough Publishing Company, Farmington, PA, 2003, pp.156-161).

Sunday, March 11, 2007

Today if You Hear His Voice - March 11, 2007

"Today if You Hear His Voice"

Text: Exodus 17, Psalm 95, John 4

Psalm 95 reminds us of the mumbling and grumbling of the Israelites wandering in the wilderness. As we experience this Psalm, we are encouraged to be exuberant in our praise of God, to soften our hearts, to listen to God, and to drink from the living water that Jesus offers. His Eye is on the Sparrow - March 4, 2007

"His Eye is on the Sparrow"

Texts: Romans 4:1-17; Luke 12:6-7; I Kings 18:16-45; Psalm 121

Just as winter gives way to spring, God breaks in upon our sorrow and sadness with joy, darkness gives way to light, and death submits to life. Psalm 121 reminds us that God is watching over us and cares for our loved ones. He cares about sparrows, He cares about cedar waxwings, and He cares about you.

Where Do You Hide? - February 25, 2007

"Where Do You Hide?"

Text: Psalm 32

Humans have been good at hiding since the beginning of time. Like Adam and Eve, King David, and the prophet Jonah, we tend to hide from our problems and from those we have wronged. David offers us the solution to our guilt in Psalm 32, by suggesting that when we feel the need to hide, we are to run toward God, and find our hiding place in Him.

Laodicea: Stop Kidding Yourself - February 18, 2007

"Laodicea: Stop Kidding Yourself"

Text: Revelation 3:14-22

After summarizing the lessons from the past six weeks, Pastor Jon concludes our study on the letters to the Seven Churches of Revelation with a look at the letter to the church in Laodicea. By properly understanding the drinking water situation in Laodicea, and by looking that the things that this church was well known for, we realize that this passage is an exhortation to be sure that we have not deceived ourselves (Like the emperor in Hans Christian Anderson's classic children's story). Pastor Jon concludes this message with an invitation that everyone needs to hear.

Philadelphia: Through Open Doors - February 11, 2007

"Philadelphia: Through Open Doors"

Text: Revelation 3:7-13

Pastor Jon continues our study on the letters to the Seven Churches of Revelation with a look at the letter to the believers in Philadelphia. While Jesus knows that they are a church with "little strength," He places an open door in front of them that nobody can shut. As we explore the options for what was meant by the "open door," may we be always look for the open doors that God has placed before us and faithfully walk through them.

"Sardis: The Importance of Keeping Watch"

Text: Revelation 3:1-6

Pastor Ken Wish looks at the historical backdrop of the city of Sardis to shed some light on the call of Christ for them to awake from their lethargy. The modern-day healthy church must remain alert and focus on their purpose of rescuing the lost.

"Thyatira: When Salt Loses Its Saltiness"

Texts: Revelation 2:18-29

Pastor Ken Wish helps the modern-day church negotiate the waters of tolerance and plurality that are so prevalent in our culture today. Jesus reminds the believers in Thyatira to hold fast to the truth, not compromising their faith in the face of teachings of tolerance and plurality. Join us as we continue our study of the Churches of Revelation.

Pergamum: Accept No Counterfeits - January 21, 2007

"Pergamum: Accept No Counterfeits"

Texts: Revelation 2:12-17, I Corinthians 13, Numbers 22-25:3 & 31:16, Hebrews 4:12-13

Pastor Jon Twitchell continues our journey through the Seven Churches of Revelation with a look at the cultural and religious practices in Pergamum. By looking at the cults of Demeter, Dionysus, and Aesculapius, we can better understand the cryptic imagery that Jesus uses in the letter He asks John to write. In the midst of all that is false and counterfeit, we must remain true to the living God!

Sunday, January 14, 2007

Smyrna: Hold Fast to Your Faith - January 14, 2007

"Smyrna: Hold Fast to Your Faith"

Texts: Revelation 2:8-11

Pastor Ken Wish continues this seven week series on church health based on the letters to the seven churches of Revelation. By looking at the letter to the believers in Smyrna we find encouragement to hold fast despite persecution or tribulation.

"Ephesus: Remember Your First Love"

Texts: Revelation 1; Revelation 2:1-7

Pastor Jon begins a seven week series on church health based on the letters to the seven churches of Revelation. During this first week of the series, he looks at the letter to the believers in Ephesus and explores what it may have meant that they had "forsaken their first love." As we consider those lessons, may we pursue God with all of our hearts, may we greatly love our neighbors, and may we do all we can to bring those two great loves together.

Never Alone - December 31, 2006

"Never Alone"

Texts: John 1:1-14; Hebrews 1:1-8; Matthew 1:23

While Christmas is supposed to be "the most wonderful time of the year," for many it is truly the loneliest. Author Taylor Caldwell writes that the meaning of Christmas is that "we are never alone. Not when the night is darkest, the wind coldest, the world seemingly most indifferent." This is the message of Immanuel--God with us. Pastor Jon prays that you can claim the promise of Immanuel--this Christmas and for many Christmases to come.

Note: This sermon was preached on December 24th, 2006. It is published for December 31st, to replace a Service of Lessons and Carols which is not easily reproduced for podcast.

The Little Drummer Boy - December 24, 2006

"The Legend of the Little Drummer Boy"

Texts: Matthew 2; Mark 12:41-44

Not a traditional sermon, this fictional retelling of The Legend of the Little Drummer Boy (written by Pastor Jon in 2003) helps us imagine how the character of the Little Drummer Boy might have interacted with real biblical characters. While the story is imaginative and fictional, it contains truths which help us give of our best to God.

This telling of the story was recorded at an evening service on December 17, 2006, and published on Christmas Eve, December 24, 2006. Come back next week (December 31st) for a recording of the December 24th sermon. We will return to a regular schedule on January 7th, 2007.

Jumping for Joy - December 17, 2006

"Jumping for Joy"

Texts: Luke 1:26-55

True joy is found, not in circumstances and surroundings, but in a deep and abiding knowledge of God and our role in His Kingdom. Pastor Jon looks at Mary, Elizabeth, and John the Baptist (as an infant) to see what we can learn about this deep joy which is available to us...even in the midst of situations which seem full of despair.

Messiah Brings Shalom - December 10, 2006

"Messiah Brings Shalom"

Texts: Luke 3:1-18; Malachi 3:1-4

In our world of dischord and war, it seems odd to speak of the "Peace of Christ." When we hear the message of John the Baptist, it sounds less like a message of peace and good news, but one of judgment. And yet, true shalom is only found when we are at peace with God, ourselves, and others. May Christ's peace reign in your heart this Christmas.

When All Hell Breaks Loose, Help Is On the Way - December 3, 2006

"When All Hell Breaks Loose, Help Is On the Way"
Texts: Luke 21:25-36; I Thessalonians 4:13-18; James 5:13-16
The first Sunday of Advent marks the beginning of the new liturgical year. The Advent celebration is not simply about marking time until Christmas, but an opportunity for us to boldly proclaim the message of hope. This hope is rooted in the knowledge that God's promises are forever, and that Christ will come again. This service concluded with a time of prayer and anointing.

Complete Surrender to Christ the King - November 26, 2006

"Complete Surrender to Christ the King"

Texts: Hebrews 12:1-2; John 18:28-40

Eric Liddell, also known as The Flying Scotsman, helps us understand what it means to orient our lives around the Kingdom of God. Jesus' dialogue with Pontius Pilate reminds us that His Kingdom is not one of swords or spears, but a spiritual Kingdom to which his followers belong. May we always place Him first in our lives.

The Marathon of Faith - November 19, 2006

"The Marathon of Faith"

Texts: Hebrews 11-12:2; Psalm 73:24-28; Mark 13:1-8

The author of Hebrews exhorts his readers to hold fast and to follow hard after Christ as we run this great marathon of faith. Christianity is not something that we can take up when it is convenient, but an all-consuming obsession that leaves time for nothing else. To run this race, we must lay aside everything that would hinder us and fix our eyes on Jesus.

The Requirements of the New Covenant - November 12, 2006

"The Requirements of the New Covenant"

Texts: Hebrews 10:11-24; Ruth 3:1-4:17; Mark 12:35-44

Hebrews chapter 10 provides some snapshots of ways in which the New Covenant has different requirements than the Old Covenant. While the Old Covenant was structured on lists and laws, the New Covenant is based upon the Law of Love. We give our all, not because we are required to, but because we are motivated to respond to God's great love for us.

The Old and New Covenants - November 5, 2006

"The Old and New Covenants"

Texts: Genesis 15; Hebrews 9:1-15; Mark 12:28-34

By looking more closely at the covenant traditions of the ancient culture, Pastor Jon highlights more ways in which the author of Hebrews demonstrates that the New Covenant is greater than and fulfills the Old Covenant. We learn that when Jesus gives His life on the cross, He is fulfilling the promise made to Abram in Genesis 15.

Salvation Full and Free - October 29, 2006

"Salvation Full and Free"

Texts: Genesis 14; Hebrews 7; Mark 10:46-52

The author of Hebrews spends a great deal of energy comparing Jesus to the Old Testament character of Melchizedek. Not only is Jesus similar to Melchizedek, but Melchizeded is greater than Levi and the Levitical priests. The logical argument provided by Hebrews helped the original readers understand how they could put their faith in Jesus as their Great High Priest, even though he was from the tribe of Judah. Because of this, Jesus offers complete salvation which is eternal. He invites us to enter into an ongoing relationship with Him, and like Blind Bartimaeus, we are to follow Him wherever He leads.

Finding Jesus Through Suffering - October 22, 2006

"Finding Jesus Through Suffering"

Texts: Mark 10:35-38; Hebrews 1:9-10; Isaiah 53:3-12; Genesis 3:17-19Job 38:1-7, 34-41; Romans 8:17; Matthew 25:35-40

The Problem of Evil asks "How can evil co-exist in a universe with an all-good, all-powerful God?" Pastor Jon Twitchell looks at this difficult problem, drawing from the doctrine of free will, the tarnishing of creation at the fall of man, and the simple fact that, like Job, we were not with God at the creation of the universe. However, we can be confident that through our suffering we can find Jesus, and that we can also find Jesus when we go to those who are suffering. We find healing in His brokenness, we find life in his death.

Of Campaigns and Callings - October 15, 2006

"Of Campaigns and Callings"

Texts: Mark 10:13-45; Hebrews 5:1-10; Philippians 2:1-11

Twenty-first century political campaigns in the United States seem to be a far cry from the intentions of the founding fathers of our country. And yet, the aspirations for titles and positions go back in history. Every organization with people seems to have a political aspect to it, and even Jesus' band of disciples was not immune to the idea of campaigning. In the midst of the campaign, we're reminded that the first shall be last, the one who wishes to be great must serve, and leadership is about following a calling, not running a campaign.

What's Your Perspective? - October 8, 2006

"What's Your Perspective"

Texts: Job 1:13-21, 19:25; Mark 10:17-31; Psalm 90; Hebrews 4:12-16

Contrasting Job with the Rich Young Ruler forces us to consider the priorities in our own life. Our ability to face the inevitable losses and tragedy in life is determined by our perspective on life. By setting our sights on things above, we are better able to weather the storms in life.

This message extensively references a recent barn fire in Albion, ME, which you can read about here or watch a news report here.

The Exact Representation of God's Being - October 1, 2006

"The Exact Representation of God's Being"

Texts: I Corinthians 13:2; Hebrews 1:1-14, 2:5-12

The author of Hebrews states that Jesus is the radiance of God's glory, and the exact representation of His being. In a world where God's message is so often drowned out by the noise around us, it is good to be reminded that God continues to speak to His people, and uses the Church to communicate His presence to the world.

Homecoming - The Temple of Your Heart - September 10, 2006

The Temple of Your Heart

Texts: I Kings 5-8; Jeremiah 31:31-33; II Corinthians 3:3

Homecoming weekend not only provides the opportunity to review the history of our local church, but also our place within the history of God's interaction with mankind. The dedication of Solomon's Temple provides the backdrop for our understanding of God's covenant with His people and how He desires to dwell within human hearts.

Teach Me Thy Way, O Lord - September 3, 2006

Teach Me Thy Way, O Lord

Texts: I Kings 3:16-28; Matthew 25:14-30

We continue our study of Solomon with the first major test of his God-given wisdom. Faced with a dilemma, Solomon wisely considers a third option to discover the truth. We are reminded that it was not simply enough for Solomon to ask for wisdom, or for God to give him that wisdom, but Solomon had to choose to use that wisdom.

Seek Ye First the Kingdom of God - August 27, 2006

Seek Ye First the Kingdom of God

License Plate Handout

Texts: I Kings 2:10-12; I Kings 3:3-14; Matthew 6:25-34

Solomon's request for wisdom (an understanding and discerning heart) provides an example of one who understands the difference between needs and wants, as well as an example of faith that helps us in our own stewardship decisions. If we seek God's Kingdom first, we will have no need of worrying about the material concerns of this world.

An Ungrateful Response to Grace - August 13, 2006

An Ungrateful Response to Grace

Texts: John 6:22-27; Luke 17:11-19; Psalm 78:23-32; Exodus 16; II Samuel 9:1-13; II Samuel 16:1-4; II Samuel 19:24-28

The story of Mephibosheth forms an example for how we should live our lives as a response to God's grace. When compared to the crowds who sought after loaves to fill their bellies or the Israelites who hoarded manna, we see Mephibosheth as one who recognizes his dependence upon David's grace, but does not presume upon it.

The House of God - July 30, 2006

The House of God

Texts: II Samuel 7; Ephesians 2:19-22; Isaiah 53:4-6

This sermon takes a look at the Davidic covenant as recorded in Second Samuel 7, in terms of the short-term fulfillment found in Solomon and the temple, as well as the long-term fulfillment found in the person and work of Jesus the Christ. All are invited to come and take their place as a living stone within the new temple of God--the Church.

Worshipping with Wild Abandon - July 23, 2006

Worshipping with Wild Abandon

Text: II Samuel 6

This sermon takes a look at Second Samuel 6, and looks at the lessons about worship that we can learn from Uzzah, Michal, and David. When we truly "worship with wild abandon," we are not concerned with protecting either God's reputation or our own, but are offering ourselves completely for His glory.

Upside-down, Backwards, and Inside-Out - July 16, 2006

Upside-down, Backwards, and Inside-Out

Texts: II Samuel 5:1-10; II Corinthians 12:2-10; Mark 6:1-13

The Gospel of Jesus Christ is truly counter-cultural....upside-down, backwards, and inside-out. In this sermon, Pastor Jon Twitchell challenges us to examine our lives and our churches to see if we are simply following the conventional wisdom of this world, or if we are following the patterns set by Jesus.

A Matter of Life and Death - July 9, 2006

A Matter of Life and Death

Texts: II Samuel 1:1-27; Matthew 5:43-48

The story of the end of Saul's life forces us to confront questions about the Sanctity of Life. However, it would be good for us to remember that Sanctity of Life is not only about when life begins or when life ends, but about how we live our lives between birth and death.

We Need a Hero? - July 2, 2006

We Need a Hero?

Text: I Samuel 17:1-49

The story of David and Goliath is interpreted against the backdrop of superhero stories like Superman, Spiderman, or Zorro. David challenges us to not simply wait around for a "superhero" to step in and do amazing things, but to use the gifts that God has given us to make a difference in the world around us.

A Citizen of the Kingdom of God - June 18, 2006

A Citizen of the Kingdom of God

Text: I Samuel 8:1-20

We consider the nature of citizenships and kingdoms as we look at the Israelites' request for a king to rule over them. As we consider the systems of human government, we are challenged to orient our lives around the spiritual realities of the Kingdom of God. We are primarily to be citizens of God's Kingdom, before being citizens of the kingdoms of this world.

I Serve at the Pleasure of God Almighty - June 11, 2006

I Serve at the Pleasure of God Almighty

Texts: I Samuel 3:1-20; II Corinthians 4:5-12

Have you ever wondered what it must be like for a Presidential appointee to receive a phone call asking them to serve "at the Pleasure of the President of the United States." This sermon explores the call that the young boy Samuel received in the middle of the night asking him to serve "at the Pleasure of God Almighty." How do you respond to God's call on your life?

Pentecost - Crash Helmets & Life Jackets - June 4, 2006

Pentecost - Crash Helmets & Life Jackets

Text: Acts 2:1-41

Pentecost Sunday provides an opportunity to consider the great power of the Holy Spirit available to the Church. Unfortunately, we are often ill-equipped to tap into God's power, and would be surprised if we encountered the sort of transformational worship that took place on that first Christian Pentecost. Theologian Annie Dillard suggests that our ushers should distribute crash helmets and life jackets in case the Almighty chose to show up at church.

A Faithful and True Witness - May 28, 2006

A Faithful and True Witness

Texts: Acts 1:1-11; I John 5:9-13

With present-day discussion about "The DaVinci Code" and the "Gospel of Judas," the Church is challenged to consider why it places its faith in the message revealed through the current scriptural Canon. As we consider the witness of those early Apostles, our faith is strengthened by the realization that they were willing to suffer and die because of the message that they testified about. Are we prepared to be that faithful and true witness in our world today?

Faith is the Victory - May 21, 2006

Faith is the Victory

Texts: John 15:9-17; I John 5:1-5

The mission of the church is not to be a safe place for the saved and the sanctified, but to take the message of hope and holiness to the world around us. We're not the church primarily when we're gathered within these four walls, we're the church primarily when we're away from these four walls engaging our world as conduits of the "wonderful, matchless grace of Jesus." We're called to love others. How do you know that you are loving others? By loving God. Both our love for God and our love for others are derived from God's love for us.

With this backdrop, Pastor Jon looks at the potential reasons why the Church in North America is failing to grow at the same pace of churches around the world. Is it possible that we are no longer finding lost people because we believe that lost people don't want to be found? Is it possible that we know the reasons they would reject Christ better than they know those reasons? Do we lack the victory that Jesus promised because our faith needs to be strenghtened?

Abiding in Him - May 14, 2006

Abiding in Him

Text: John 15:1-8; I John 4:7-21

On Mother's Day, we are reminded that the most basic and fundamental characteristic of God's nature is love. Not only does "love" describe who God is, but we also realize that God defines our understanding of "love." The call of Scripture is for us to abide in God so that He abides in us. Instead of settling for being "saved from Hell," we are to be in an intimate relationship with our Creator. Perhaps this intimacy is best pictured by the intimate abiding of a mother and unborn child. How do you know you love God? When you produce fruit and love others.

The Reality of Present Risenness - April 30, 2006

The Reality of Present Risenness

Text: I John 3:1-8

What difference does Easter really make? Does the reality of the resurrection affect the way in which we live our lives? Easter is not simply an historical event, but has very real ramifications for our lives today. Not only did Jesus walk from an empty tomb, but He is alive and active today. we must be continually aware of what Brennan Manning calls "Present Risenness."

Easter - Rejoice! The Song is Alive! - April 16, 2006

Easter Sunday - Rejoice! The Song is Alive

Texts: Isaiah 53:6; Acts 3:15; Luke 7:18-23; Luke 15:1-7; John 9; John 11:1-44

As the continuation of the message begun on Good Friday, we can rejoice today for the Song is alive. For even though we killed the Author of Life, God is more powerful than darkness, life is stronger than death, God's song is stronger than the silence. The lost are found, the blind see, the dead live again. What shall our response be to this proclamation of the Gospel? What song shall we now sing? To whom shall we sing our song? Let us echo the words of Casting Crowns--indeed, "let my lifesong sing to You!"

Good Friday - Killing the Song - April 14, 2006

Good Friday - Killing the Song

Texts: John 1; John 18-19; Philippians 2:1-8; Acts 3

The creation of Narnia from Lewis's "The Magician's Nephew" formed the backdrop for an evening of dramatic readings which culminated in this message about killing the author of life. For three horrible days, the Light of the World was snuffed out, the author of the song had been silenced. Instead of singing the song of the Creator, we chose instead to sing our own song. Let us never forget that it was as though our sins and disobedience nailed Him to that tree.

Download Sermon Notes for "The Quest - The Live You've Longed For: It's Not About You"

Texts: Mark 1:14-20; I Corinthians 1:20-31

Jesus took ordinary people and asked them to do extraordinary tasks. On this quest, we learn that our participation in the Kingdom of God isn't really about us--it's about Him. Will you choose to follow Him with all of your heart, regardless of the cost? Henri Nouwen says, "There is no middle ground here. Jesus went to Jerusalem to put people in a situation where they had to say yes or no."

The Quest - Christlike Character

Download Sermon Notes for "The Quest - Christlike Character"

Texts: Romans 12:1-2

God desires to form Christlike character within us. If we are a broken pot, it is not simply enough for Him to rescue the pieces of the pot from being thrown out--instead, He loves us so much that He desires to pick up the pieces, put them back together again, clean the inside of the pot, fill it up with His Spirit, for the purpose of restoring the Image of God within us. We are called to be transformed--allowing the Character of Christ to shine through us.

The Quest - You Can Receive Power

Download Sermon Notes for "The Quest - You Can Receive Power"

Texts: Acts 1:8; 2 Timothy 1:7, 14

Our fifth session on our Quest, guided by Frank Moore's book "The Power to be Free," causes us to consider the ways in which we are empowered by God to do His work. As we are dependant upon His power and allow His power to flow through us, we find ourselves caught up in His Kingdom work. This power gives us strength, it works on our behalf, and it is at work within us.

The Quest - You Can Experience Purity

Download Sermon Notes for "The Quest - You Can Experience Purity"

Texts: Matthew 5:8; Psalm 51; Philippians 2:1-8; James 4:8

Scripture teaches that the goal of the Christian is to have a pure heart. Is it possible to experience this kind of purity in the world around us? What does a pure heart look like? Soren Kierkegaard suggests that heart purity is "to will one thing." James suggests that we must be single-minded in all we do. Heart purity begins when we follow Jesus as our example and seek only to do the Father's will.

The Quest - You Can Accept Love

Texts: John 3:16; Luke 15; Matthew 13:45-46

This third session on our Quest highlights the way in which God's Spirit transforms us through His love.Luis Palau, (the "Latin Billy Graham") is famous for saying "God loves you, loves you, loves you." However, this truth doesn't simply mean that we can live however we like--God loves us so much that He desires to transform us more and more into His image. Not only does God love us, He loves others through us.

Text: John 16:12-15

This second sermon on "The Quest" (based on Frank Moore's book The Power to be Free) looks at the ways in which the Holy Spirit acts as our guide. With a multitude of guides and teachers offering their thoughts to us, we must remember that the Holy Spirit is the best guide for us to follow--the best teacher for us to learn from. We can always find people who want to tell us what we should do--but we should be a student of the Holy Spirit.

Text: II Kings 2:1-12; John 14:1-6, 15-18

Have you ever had a task for which you need outside assistance? Jesus left his disciples with two great tasks--the Great Commandments and the Great Commission. While the tasks seem impossible for us to complete on our own, Jesus left us with Great Promises of outside help--the Holy Spirit. This sermon begins our study through "The Quest," based on Frank Moore's book The Power to be Free.

Following Instructions - February 19, 2006

Following Instructions

Text: II Kings 5:1-17

The story of Naaman's leprosy reminds us of the importance of following the instructions that God gives us, regardless of how simple or foolish they may appear. Instead of following the instructions that are given to us, we often are tempted to try to figure things on our own. When we are broken, it is necessary to consult the instructions, to learn how God might provide us with healing. It is precisely God's grace alone which heal us, not only our bodies, but our spirits as well. It is our faith and obedience which opens us to God's healing power to be at work in our lives.

One With Authority - January 29, 2006

One With Authority

Text: Mark 1:21-28

What does it mean to say that Jesus "taught as One with Authority"? In our pluralistic culture, the role of authorityhas been diminished--instead of trusting those in positions of influence, we are tempted to only trust ourselves. At the same time, we long for a culture which shares a common moral authority where "right" is always "right" and "north" is always "north." Our best self-improvements leave us with a sense of emptiness and failure, and so we must reorient our compass to follow the "One with Authority."

Follow How Far - January 22, 2006

Follow How Far?

Text: Psalm 62: 5-8; Jonah 3:1-5, 10; 1 Corinthians 7:17-23; Mark 1:14-20

At the heart of the message of Christianity is the doctrine that we can have a personal relationship with God Almighty. And yet, it's important for us to remember that we are on a Great Adventure with a Great Commander! As we hear the Gospel lesson about the calling of the disciples we are challenged to consider how far we are willing to follow our Leader.

A New Wardrobe - January 1, 2006

A New Wardrobe

Text: Revelation 21:1-6a, Isaiah 43

TLC's "What Not to Wear" provides the backdrop for this New Year's sermon about our God who is making all things new. As we prepare to throw away our old wardrobe, we know that God is always doing a new thing and desires to clothe us with His robes. What "New Thing" does God want for you this year?
